| So i got both an Ibanez AD-9 and Ibanez CS-9 today in the mail and after hearing talk about the famous DM-2 and CE-2 can't help but wonder how much of a difference there is between the Ibanez and Boss. Seeing as they are both MIJ and contain the same amount of controls. Maybe i'm making a beginner's mistake, but that is what you guys are for! Sorry if i'm posting this in the wrong spot because its not strictly Boss. Thank you in advance |

In general, they are two different companies with no corporate ties to my knowledge with their own R&D departments. I'm sure each in heated competition tear apart each other's products to reverse engineer. I think what may be a better example of blatant rip-off would be Behringer pedals (someone correct me if I'm wrong.. do Behringer pedals sound the same as Boss?) Ibanez has quite an offering over the decades & in fact, if I'm not mistaken precedes Boss in date. I think Boss & Ibanez respective products are different enough.
Oops, reread the topic & cannot comment on the specifics CE-2 vs. CS-9 & DM-2 vs. AD-9 but what I stated above should generally be true. Now I'm curious.. those pedals are a great comparison to hear the results.. anyone?
Oh, welcome to Bossarea mongo! |

I tried an old CS-9 ones, and the is a very good pedal. In my ears it's better than the CE-2... But..
The CE-2 is blue. Sometimes you forget that, but when you do you get back on track. You need to have the CE-2.. |

mongo:
the CS-9 is one of my favorite chorus pedals of all time. i used to have an '82 of it and i regret selling it. i've also had a dozen or so CE-2's from all eras.
the CS-9 is brighter and has a bit more of a "wet" sound. stock it will reach a higher rate than a CE-2 and also will "shimmer" a lot more than a CE-2. CE-2's sound a bit more like a true chorus amp and are a touch warmer, but CS9's are more versatile.
basically... imo, a CS9 sounds more like a CE-5 but with the warmth and dynamics of a CE-2 (assuming you are speaking of a vintage CS9 and not a reissue).
i like my silver screw CE-2's tone slightly better than a CS9, but the CS9 will do several things the CE-2 won't.
as for the AD9, DM-2, and DM-3, i've owned all three of these as well. i honestly prefer the AD9 to the others. it is darker, but imo, you can get more of an "up front" sound from the delay (good for slapbacks) whereas the DM-2 and DM-3 both seem to have a little "space" in their sound. basically, if i remember correctly (i sold my AD9 almost 10 years ago) it seemed to color the dry guitar tone a bit less than the DM-2 and DM-3 do.

| I can't comment on the choruses, as I only own a CE-2, which I rarely use, but I also own a DM-2 and DM-3 and the singer in my band has a (reissue) Ibanez AD-9. The latter sounds much darker than the Boss pedals. I also have a Ibanez Delay Champ. which is the follow up to the AD9, which sounds really good (better IMO than the DM-3), but the controls are confusing: setting the rate at 12 o'clock is not 150ms (half of the maximum), so I don't use it in my backup setup. |

| i have the reissue ones, so that might be a whole other story. i love the sound of them, especially the AD9 because it gets rid of the ice-pick sound of my strat. all of my pedals are boss and ibanez (with the exception of the crybaby) and they are great pedals to work with. thank you for your replies. |
