I couple months back I bought a vox night train and matching cab. I've decided I'm really not a big fan of the greenback (chinese made) speaker. My biggest complaint is how harsh my tubescreamer OD sounds through it. I used to use the night train head through my AC15 combo's wharfdale speaker (that was broken in) and it sounded better to me than this new greenback.
Anywho, I'm thinking about buying a celestion blue to replace it. Good idea or not so much? I basically play all kinds of blues and rock music (an equal amount of clean and dirty). Thanks! |

Just wondering, have you tried backing off your level and upping the gain on your TS?Also a 7 band eq stomp might really help. That could save you some hassle and coin! Good luck |

ya, actually thats the only way I can get even close to something desireable. I use a 7band eq to scoop the mids/low mids a bit and I use my ts at about half gain and 1/3 to 1/2 level. Either way, I'm just not happy with the sound. I'm even thinking about looking into a totally new amp...the NT cab is like 250 and a celestion blue is like 250-300, so thats like more than my NT head...there's gotta be a better solution...
I'm about to just sell this thing and pick up a fender hot rod deluxe.......... |

Have you thought about getting a speaker with a bigger rating that won't breakup so quick..? like the celestion V30 or the heritage..both rated at 60 watts.... i know both Dumble and Boogies used to put EV 12L's in their amps which are rated at 200 watts ..twice what the amp was rated at...i'm lucky enough to have two rola celestion greenbacks from the 70's in my 2 x 12 cab and they sound sweet to me but then i'm using two with a marshall with output tube attenuators(european version of THD yellowjackets) that scale the power back to 30(ish) watts and both speakers are rated at 25 watts each..clean sounds are very important to me as i would use a cleanish sound 75% of the time on gigs....i also have a selmer 15 watt tube combo from the 60's with the original goodmans 12" speaker in it...great little amp but when she heats up shes starts getting dirty and not amp to use if you need a lot of clean headroom,i also used another players Vox AC-15 a while back on a gig...great amp and i could of easily done the gig with just that and the guitar, the touch and response of the amp were terrific but not an amp for getting super cleans sounds with a drummer like ours..i had to maxx the amp out volume wise just to keep up and it was a fairly small room we were playing in....if your gigging and need the headroom the Fender might be a good idea..... |

well, the issue isn't really an early break up. I play in an auditorium that reverberates like a canyon...i run my night train on 7.5 watts and can still barely turn it up at all. I don't really use the amps OD much (thats how soft it has to be). I just am at a point where neither the clean or dirty sounds I get out of this thing are desirable (so whats the point, right!!!!). This cab just sounds cheap/harsh. I liked the cleans I got out of my ac 15, but i've never been a fan of anything dirty I get out of any vox (i like the sounds....just not for what I"m playing).
I'm leaning towards just selling all this stuff and just picking up the hot rod deluxe...the only problem there is that it's 40 watts and I'm probably not going to be able to crank it much. If i can get the tone I want, i'll figure the rest out (amp isolating, attenuator, or whatever it takes). |

That's probably the reason why it doesn't sound right, you're turned down way too low. Most amps sound like shit when turned down too low, and the bigger the amp, the bigger the problem. Isn't it possible to use your amp with an attenuator? |
