| I tried out an ML-2 today, and I brought my HM-3 along to try out a theory. I set up both pedals the same, and switched between the two to see if there was any difference in sound. They both sounded the same. I tried numerous settings and they still sounded alike. So my theory is that Boss decided to reissue the HM-3 but reissued it with a different name. Has anyone else tried this? Can anyone agree with this theory? |

| It wouldn't surprise me since Boss is not reissuing any pedals, they would have to change the name. I haven't had a chance to compare though. I was thinking the ML-2 was the Boss version of a Keeley modded MT-2 though, but it wouldn't surprise me though.... |

hmm thats wierd. I dont have either, so i cant try it out, but I doubt they would do a re-issue, even with a different name, however, they probably do sound similar, since they did so many distortions, theres no where else to go really. (and they have the exact same controls too )
Did you open it up and look if the components were similar? |

I have both and I don´t think they sound exactly the same, there is much more bottom end in ML-2. I also like the overall sound of ML-2 a lot more. I have opened both of them up (on different occasions) and they surely look very different, but as you know ML-2 has surface mounted components, and some of them are really small. So it could be difficult for me to see how close they are as HM-3 is wired the “traditional” way with bigger components. Some time ago ML-2 was in a topic and, if I don´t remember wrong, someone said it was a COSM technology pedal. I´m not sure of this.

| i dont think its cosm, since they seem to put COSM on everything that uses it, and I dont see what it would be modeling (unless the HM-3 :P). Even FZ-5 has cosm printed on it, even though its a compact, so i think they would do the same on this one |

I believe the ML-2 is cosm but it doesn't model any known amp or effect. The reason I think it is cosm is because the electornics are practically identical to the DN-2, FZ-5, FBR and FBM. When you open them up you can't see any differences and some of them are using the same PCBs.
Could they have modelled the HM-3 in the ML-2? To my ears they don't sound similar enough. More bottom end, as Goran said and I think there's more distortion too. |

| I agree with Goran (and bossarea). The HM-3 sounds shrill compared to the ML-2 and the ML-2 has more bottom end and also more output. Way different components inside too. |
