Analog for sure as all of Boss distortions/overdrives except for MZ-2.

I think the MZ-2's distortion is analog; only its chorus and delay functions are digital. I think even my MZ-2 manual admitted as much, but I'll have to go back and check....

I think you're right there. It wouldn't really make sense to create distortion digitally.

Good point! Digital distortion would probably sound like an 80s video arcade game making an "explosion" sound.

fyi... just checked my MZ-2 manual, and they kind of dance around what's digital. the first line on its cover reads "The BOSS MZ-2 is a new type distortion effect that includes high quality digital delay." under "panel description", the delay and chorus are described as digital, but the distortion is not.

and I agree with boss freak and bossarea about the sound 'quality' of any digital distortion... (for that matter, you don't even need ICs to create a '1980s arcade game'-quality distortion sound -- the FZ-3 sounds like you're about to blow up an output transformer at some settings, and it's made from 100% discrete components.) but I digress....

getting back to the original topic of this forum (sort of), can anyone comment on how a BD-2 compares to, say, a MIJ SD-1 or an OD-1?

The BD-2 has more gain to it than the SD-1, and also the OD-1 {I think}. I'd say that the BD-2 is closer to the DS-1 then the SD-1 or
OD-1. I've even heard of the BD-2 as a glorified DS-1. That's about it.

thanks, arcananon1313! it sounds like a BD-2 is worth pursuing....
