Eruption.
Overplayed, overhyped. So quintessential it's become cliche. Like Stairway, except Stairway is awesome.
I can't handle the "tour of all my guitar solo techniques" approach. The solo has to fit the song. I have a co-worker trying to sell me on Petrucci (for the last 3 years), but I can't get into it. Give me Akerfeldt anyday.

The solo in "Easy" by FNM is the same as in the original, isn't it?

I have to be honest here, that speed guy is amazing but it leaves me cold as well....there was a time when i aspired to that sort of stuff..i.e MacLaughlin etc... but not anymore...i'm no slouch and can rattle out a bit of good ol' rock n roll with the best of them but learning mindless scales.... nah i'll pass thanks...... i think the proof is in album sales,if you look at who moves people it is the likes of U2,Dylan,Young etc... one of the 'hair on the back of the neck' moments i got lately was on the neils live concert of the 'prarie wind' album where one of his band comes in with the steel guitar...real dirty slide sound.... .......
P.S.......Congrats on going bronze verivorax...i'll have a guinness for you later.... ......... |

WOW, that's truely aweful. Only two notes... and both in the wrong key |

Here's one for ya. While each piece is neither horrible nor great, it lacks segway and flow horrifically. "TNT - 10,000 Lovers (In One)" check it out.
Peace, T-D |

awesome thread
Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right. every time i hear it, i cringe
i find Slayer has a lot of bad ones.like they just reef on the whammy bar for the while thing.
ya i agree that Nirvana had a lot of bad uncreative singalong solos. a more talented guitarist could have helped out but then again it wouldnt have been nirvana like that.

| I would say Audioslave had a few bum solos. I like Tom Morello a lot but some just don't work for me, like the one in Doesn't remind me. |

I just found something I saw about 10 years ago.. "Pungent Stench: Viva La Muerte".
The solo is bad, but not as bad as the mini-solos each band member gets immediately afterward.
Pungent Stench - Viva La Muerte
see 2:30 onward. Please remember they're supposed to be death metal.

i remember being like 7 hearing Eruption for the first time before i played guitar and just staring at the speakers like whoa. i think its a perfect blend of speed, technique, length, TONE, and attitude. its like he had something to say and he didnt say too much or too little; it just fits perfectly and thats a rare thing. remember EVH was the first of his kind and most of these techniques were not heard before (or in that context) and made famous by him. i think its an timeless epic masterpiece is all im saying and aside from maybe Machine Gun, is the most important piece of electric guitar histpry ever recorded.
although i do agree with you about Petrucci. i never could get into his stuff. hes obviously a great player but i think he falls a little short on the "total package."
