Hi DeFrag My weapon of choice... Original Italian JEN Crybaby fitted with Red or White Fasal inductors. I have both of the above JEN's, as well as a modern Dunlop GCB-95 and the Jen's beat the pants clean off the newer Dunlop GCB-95's.
The GCB-95 is more of what I would call a HiFi wah super clean and can slice cheese at 100 feet in toe down, even after I reset the pot & backed off the treble.
The Jen's have a real defined Wahhhhh & have that classic growl, that can be slightly clipped, as you dig in to the strings.
Out of the 8 Wahs, & all the moddeled wahs that I own. I must admit, I fell in love with ShakeThedevil's Vintage Shin-Ei wah, that I rebuilt for him, a few months back. His Shin-Ei also had that Jen-Fasel Sound but more defined.
I have mentioned many times, that if I wasn't an honest guy, he would have never seen it again. Plus he also knows my street address.. His was the wah only version, not the Fuzz-Wah.
I recently got a Boss PW-1 Rocker wah, but it has a very subtle wah range, even with the sweep pot maxed out. Plus mechanically, it's almost big enough to go surfing on.
I have heard that there is a sweep range mod for these, it's a very complex circuit, & I don't have a schematic for it, else I would attempt the mod.
I would be interested to hear & try out the Ibanez Weeping Demon wah. I have heard conflicting reports about these.

I had better results putting my PW-1 after the distortion, the distortion gives it a little drive, similar to the drive control on the PW-10. I would like to get a PD-1 to go with my PW-1, oneday. |

Tks guys.. just got back from GC & found a Dunlop Dime Crybaby from Hell used for $69 (off from $149 new) in outSTANDING shape so we snapped it up. I remember trading my original Crybaby to GC & they gave me about $60 which was surprising a few years ago even though a new one goes for about the same.
Anyway, I'm trying to steer my son away from too many pedals & stick with simplicity, tone, & magic fingers. But every man needs a wah & I think he'll be happy.
I need an amp stand but wanted something heavier than the On-Stage they had. I also saw a rare Boss pedal & am probably stupid for not buying it. But thats for another thread... |

Hi pedals 4 pv
I would be interested in your comments about the PW-1? I just recently bought mine, it came with the original Manual & the slip-carry case, all in very good as new condition.
But it did not have the original box... Have any of you seen the original box for one of these?
And have you heard of or seen the Sweep mod that some people on other forums have spoken about?

Hi Dr Bob I have the box and manual, but I am missing the carry case. I'll try to take a few pics of the box, I need a camera. Mostly I use my PW-10 now, and save the PW-1 for show. After a reset to factory settings, the PW-10's CUSTOM position on the TYPE knob sounds just like my PW-1. Other than what I said before, about placement after the distortion, I found mine to be affected quite a bit by magnetic fields, just as you would expect from any inductor based circuit. One has to keep the aca adaptor well away from the pedal, but I am sure that if anyone fully understands that concept, it's you. As for mods, I don't know. With the PW-1, I set the range slider switch on L, usually. The manual says that L is the setting for bass guitar, but the L setting seems to have more range. I set the range knob at noon. |

Hi Ho pedals 4 pv
I know the PW-1 & PD-1 use a Hall Effect sensor, these look for magnetic fields or how strong the field is. I am not surprised that they may me sensitive to the stray AC fields from power adapters. Maybe this is another reason they never really took off... And the fact that they are big enough to use as a surf board.
Christ & I have been chatting, about some possible mods to these pedals, & perhaps decreasing or increasing the magnetic flux desity, that the Hall sensor looks for.
Interesting comment about using your, in the L setting & sweep at noon. I will give that a try next time I am annoying the family..
I will see if I can get a pic of the carry bag for you, as well.

They are pretty big all right, and with the jacks on the front you really start taking up some real estate. |

Hard to say which wah is best, as there are too many variables. Solid state or tube amp, single coils or humbuckers and style of music. What's good for Rock may not be as good for say, calypso. |

I copy what DarrinPA said about the Steve Vai model, I bought one second hand for my guitarist and he loves it. It doesn't have that disco type sound, that midrange peak that a Crybaby has, it's a lot more agressive sounding.
I compared it extensively next to my Morley dual basswah, with both guitar and bass and both models come very close to each other tonewise but the Bad Horsie's filter is tuned a little higher. Or in other words, the basswah is just a darker sounding bad horsie.
I like the sound of the Vox wah too, remember the wah sound on Metallica's Black Album, that's a Vox wah. |
