URGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I finally got a DM-2

Once I got it, I went to clean it, tried to take the knob off the repeat rate pot, it was stiff, gave it a little tug, and bam the knob and shaft came out of the pot!!!!!!!!

So I can hear what it sounds like, but I am stuck with the same speed until I get the part from Boss!!!!

No big deal, but man frustrating as hell.....

BlarrrrghhHh!!!!!! Not good. But not fatal!

The pot is completely standard - you can get them many places (no need to wait for a Boss part).

It is a "16mm" 1M linear potentiometer. If you go to your local electronics supply shop or repair shop, odds are they will have one.

There are only 2 wires to unsolder and resolder - a really simple repair.

For reference, here is the Small Bear one:

(it is the "1Meg linear" one)

Thanks Laurie. You are the best.

I should be able to get one tomorrow.

So, can expect anything to be tweaked after the new pot is put in. I am messing around playing right now, and I hear that slight high pitch/ distortion buzz on when the pedal is on. Maybe it was tweaked already, maybe it is a result of the damaged pot?

I miht have to make a recording to send to someone who can tell if something Is up once I get it fixed.

My 82 Ad-9 has no suck issue.

That buzz is a 100% indication that someone has tweaked the trim-pots. To reset them, it's a bit of a pain... you really need a scope. See:
http://www.bossarea.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4554

You will almost certainly find that "VR3" is right at the end of it's travel in one direction. If I didn't have a scope, I'd back VR3 slowly away from the end it was hard against until the buzzing dies down.

hope this isnt a obviousl question or that im not hijacking this thread, but why would one want to adjust the trimpots in a dm-2, what difference will it make?

I think this happens when someone on the net present their opinion as a fact like: "I think you can adjust the tone of the delay by turning the trimpot"
When someone else is stupid enough to try this.....

At the risk of convincing someone to actually do this (please don't!)... by adjusting VR3 you can actually make the delay time longer - this is at the expense of fidelity (that annoying buzzing sound). The factory settings are the best balance between fidelity and delay time.

Uh-oh. Shouldn't tell me that. My friends BF-2 goes under the tweek
this weekend, I guess I'll tell him to bring his DM-2 as well.

DON'T DO IT!! (unless you do the trim-pot replacement thing so you can put the old one back in when you get sick of the buzzing)

I am going to try to make my repair today, but a/b next the AD-9 I got, it sure sounds like my DM-2 has longer repeats than 300ms. Maybe the "longer repeats" tweak was done and that is why I am hearing that slight buzz/ whine what ever.

Just got back, and my local supplier. Only has split shaft 1 meg pots. The seem a little taller than the orginal boss version. I bought it, but I am not sure to install it or not?

I can virtually guarantee that is the case...

Just check if the knob fits - it should. There is generally no problem putting a set-screw knob on a split shaft.
