Hey guys I had an MIT GE-7 just sitting around as I barely used it compared to my PQ-4 which I absolutely love. So I had been hearing good things about the Tonejam Sniper Mod for the GE-7, so I went ahead and bought the kit, which was $25, and came with all the components plus some desoldering braid and some very thin solder, which was very useful for this kind of work. I followed the instructions, and was up in running in about an hour (it took me a while to get used to using the Desoldering Braid, but now I'm a champ). I got the mod because I hated the hiss that occured when I moved the sliders past neutral(0) on the EQ. So I plugged it in and turned it on. Immediately I thought I had done something wrong because after kicking on the pedal I didn't hear any extra noise at all. I went to play something and sure enough everything was working, I went and boosted and lowered some sliders and they worked. I was terribly impressed, and recommened this mod to anyone who is not so satisfied by their GE-7.
The only complaint I have what-so-ever was that when I boosted some of the higher signals that I got some hiss. Although I think this is hiss that was already in my chain and just got boosted. I think it's probably because of ground loops. But I sent Kevin an e-mail and we'll see what he says. Regardless it makes the GE-7 so much better.

What does the modification involve? Are there circuit changes, or is it upgrading certain components...?

It's all just component upgrades, changing IC's, changing types of capacitors, changing a resistor, changing the LED for looks.
Sounds rather good compared to the stock GE-7. Although I have not tried an MIJ GE-7, but since he makes gets for both versions I assume that one isn't noise-free either. |

Could you please describe further what the mod does to your sound?
Thanks,

Whatever you want is the answer.
If all the sliders are set to the middle, then it does absolutely nothing to your sound/tone. You won't even realize it's on (which is how it should be).
An then when you move sliders around it does what they're supposed to do. Increase certain frequencies and decrease certain frequencies.
I'm not really sure what kind of answer you're looking for, but if you're using a stock GE-7, and think it's alright but could be better, this mod makes it better.
And also as an update I tried the Tonejam GE-7 with my Les Paul and it was almost entirely noise free. I guess most of the noise I heard before when boosting the high frequencies was coming from my strat pickups. |
