Hi Racer X

Are they really as good good as the reputation & stories I've heard?

One of these has been on my watch list for many years, but as you mentioned, they are rare.

Michael Hill, from Michael Hills Blues Mob, has one, & gets some seriously awesome sounds out of it.
But I'm not sure if it's a Hardtail?

Sometimes he uses a goldtop or black Les Paul.

Some great tracks over here on his MySpace page.

The hardtails are critters unlike the other variants of the GL body
guitar. The bridge itself is milled steel and contributes to the
incredible sustain they have. Also, the GL's had Kevlar in the
" blend ". This was new and created all sorts of headaches from
a machining standpoint.

Records indicate that a few more than 100 of these were made. The hand scratched P-xxx numbers are quite unique. These instruments
were essentially rushed to market. The hardtail was merely a stop-gap
while Ned was finalizing the Trans Trem. Afterward the hardtail
faded into history.

I have only ever seen 3 other hardtails. Howard Leese of Heart
played one in 1983 at Greenboro Coliseum, N.C. The second I saw in
Tokyo 1991 in a store down in Ochanomizu ( ESP Old Guitar Garage,
I think ). And the last at the Dallas Guitar show in 1993.

If you see one, buy it. You will not be disappointed.

This was my " Subway " rig when I lived in Tokyo.

Gig bag for the 'Berger, small backpack for the toys and cables,
one hand for the GK and the other hand for my canned coffee.
Damn, what times those were.

There just something perfectly right about an LP into a Marshall.

1997 epiphone explorer EXP1 in alpine white, just bought it and really never have played it.

1964 Klira Bahama model No333, real vintage and a great player, amazing Schaller pickups!

Early 70's no name probably japanese Les Paul with fake humbuckers.

1994 Ibanez RG550LTD, upgraded with EMG 81/85.

1999 Ibanez RG550LTD, upgraded with Gold mirrored- vine cut pickguard set and Seymour duncan TB-4 in bridge position.

1994 Ibanez RG550LTD Purple neon with DiMarzio tonezone and DiMarzio evolution pickups.

1992 Ibanez RBM1BK, the Reb Beach signature MIJ! one of my favourites!

1991 Ibanez RG570CS, in near mint condition.

80's Aria proII JS series.

1997 Ibanez RG550LTD, completely stock.

2005 Career stage Les Paul, worhtless piece of shit, bought as a project with a broken neck.

We're a happy family, on this pic you als see a Fender MIJ strat with schecter neck and a Hohner lx100g.

1995 Ibanez soundgear sr400, i professionaly had i resprayed last winter, the color scheme is heavily inspired on dutch 'maaslander' cheese....

Colors are more brighter than the picture shows it is actually a mixture of 'kawasaki' green and 'Suzuki' yellow.

Still have a few left i don't have pictures of here right now.

Gibson is the best guitar, so there are a lot of them represented here. The Fenders are easy to come by, so I guess that would explain those. As for the collector guitars, we spend all our money on pedals

Westone Les Paul replica, 1980
My first electric guitar. I've re-painted dark purple and chenged the original pickups with two Gibson.

Ibanez Destroyer II DT-150 [X Series], 1983
My metal kids dream.

Ibanez JEM 777 FP, 1992
I'll buy the guitar of Steve Vai so I'll play like him! Isn't true, I'm remained the same fake guitarist!

Yamaha APX7CN, 1992
'Cause the classical it's ever a classical!

Cort Steinberger Replica, 1992
Like Racer X, I had bring it everywhere.
I've customized a bit: removed tha black paint for a wood natural, put on two Di Marzios a green hell on the bridge and an very old on the neck.

Gibson Les Paul Standard, 1994
My beauty! Nothing else to add!

Yamaha CPX7 "COMPASS", 1999
A very good acoustic guitar.

Yamaha APX T1N "TRAVEL", 2000
Like the Cort I bring it everywhere.
Unplugged has a fake sound, but try to plug it in a mixer or in an ampli: terrific!

Eko RANGER 12, 2004
This is a guitar of the 60s, a very good sound.

Fender Stratocaster American Standard, 2004
I've changed the pickguard (white to pearl), the keys (Sperzel) and the single on the bridge was removed to leave place to a Seymour Duncan "Lil Screamin Demon SLSD-1"

Fenders are easier to get a variety of sounds of,their more of a 'blank canvas' guitar than gibsons IMHO....i suppose gibsons are ok too for some things............

I've to admit, but I'm begin to think the same way as you my friend.

Lastely (2 months ago) I've played Strato more than Les Paul, dunno... maybe the LP it's good for hard/heavy rock, jazz, blues, but with a Strato you can do ANYTHING, more than of this if you add an humbuckers with a switch like I've done on mine.

Maybe I'll change opinion in future, but it's what I feel now, the LP remains a very good guitar, with a very good sound, but at the moment I feel it a bit "hard", less flexible than a Strato... isn't easy to explain a sensation you know?!

Anyway my beauty remains near the Strato, I can feel that she (my guitar are all females) it's sad, so sometimes I play her.

Hi fabio....nice to see you back in the forum..... you might of seen in my pic of my guitars,my SG 2000s which is similar to a les paul with coil taps,i bring it along a good bit these days as a spare or for the end of the gigs where the songs sometimes get a bit heavier sounding.....i was having a little bit of fun with the 'gibsons are ok'..i thought pedals4pv would on with a flamethrower to me...............

P.S how did the show go...? is it finished now.....?
