Oh, I really don't think so my friend! I have to disagree with you on this. Some of my best tones(considering it's me playing them!) have come out of a Victoria combo amp with a single 15" speaker. Nothing like it, and more than likely I'll never go back to a smaller speaker. |

Now's a good time to quote Rod Stewart: "I was only joking"
No, actually SRV sounded great with 15's, and I actually prefer the tone of the 15 in my Trace Elliot bass amp compared to the 12 inchers in my live cabinet (2x12). Both speakers are Celestions btw.
It's just that live I prefer a cabinet with multiple smaller speakers to reduce the wavelength of some of the lower notes and to hear myself better onstage. I chose a 2x12 over a 4x10 cause I like my tone to be somewhat oldskool with a lot of midrange growl and presence and those 12's seem to just do that.
Also the highend rolloff on a 15" is much lower than from a 12 or 10 inch. Billy Sheehan used to use two 1x15 cabs solely for his distortion sound stacked on top of his 8x10's for his hi and low clean sounds. He used 15's because the high end wasn't so shrill because it rolls off much faster. I guess this goes for guitar too. |

I love the tone of the 15" Vibroverbs (mind you, I've never tried an original), and I'm told the "Steel King" is pretty amazing as well. The Delta Blues are IMO the best thing Peavey makes.. it was also the source of the best tone I heard when I was in Nashville (the axe was a Pacifica tele with no neck pickup).
Lemmy's signature stack has a 4x15 mega-Marshall cab..

Well we sold the van and i mananged to sneak the speaker into the boot of my car without anyone noticing when we were clearing it out..... ...it a Eminence Delta Pro 15A..i can't find much about it on the net except that it's a PA/Bass speaker but the Delta Pro 12A is highly regarded for guitar amps and thats suggested for PA/Bass applications as well..some people see it as emeinence's version of the famous EV-12L ..i'm going to build a cab slightly bigger than the one i for did for the 12's and see what the three mixed together sound like..with the 15" in mono and the 12's in stereo.... |

All of this leaves another question, how does an old speaker gets unnoticed in the back of van for years? I'm guessing that if you stuff all your gear in and out there regularly, someone should notice it someday? |

Hi-roof and semi high roof Ford Transit vans have a shelf over the drivers cab for storage..the speaker was in the corner under a couple of old towels along with a couple of spare bulbs for the lighting rig and other odds and ends thrown in there..it's a miracle that the cone didn't get punctured or damaged.... this was got one time and never used as we normally get proper EV 15's as replacements for the cabs if needed....plus i knew it was there..... ...... |

I see. Have you guys bought a van solely for band purposes or is it someone's personal car as well?
We always have to fill 3 cars with gear for the lack of better and we can't afford a van. |

Hi Dirk...our original bass player had a Volkswagen transporter that we used to use for the gigs but it meant taking the gear in and out every gig plus we needed a lockup for the rig to store it during the week so when he left we made the decision to buy a van and take turns driving it...our first Ford Transit cost us €200 ... she wasn't very pretty but she had a great heart and we only decided to upgrade when coming from a gig one night we turned a corner and it felt the chassis was going one way and the body another.... ..we then bought another 'new shape' transit but IMHO these aren't as reliable or as good pulling wise as the pre 1999 ones especially with a heavy load on board...she wasn't a great van so we sold her last week to a guy who rebuilts them as a hobby...so now were on the hunt for another..i actually like the wheeling/dealing bit and love a good haggle about the price.... ...i played in many bands where we carried the gear in our cars..i remember travelling for 5 hours to Tralee in Co Kerry one time in a Datsun Cherry with 5 other people plus the gear...don't ask me how we all fitted in....we bent the rear axle on that car.... i could go on for ages with funny stories about getting to and from gigs in cars but really if your 'on the road' a couple of times a week with a rig you need someting like a transit etc.....plus the 'craic' (irish word for fun and a good time)is 90 when everyone travels together sometimes i drive to a local gig if i'm not in the humour of having a beer or i'm sitting in with another band which i don't really do much of anymore... |
