Hello,

I am new here. I have a DM-2 that I bought new in around 1982. It has been unused for a while and I have discovered it is not functioning.

The problem appears to be the switching as when I press the footswitch it pops and cracks pretty loudly and the LED does not always come on. When it does there is no effect (sounds virtually the same as when bypassed). There was a very brief moment when I was trying to make it work that the effect came on.

I live in the Kansas City area. Is this something that any competent electronics repair person could fix or should I send it to a "specialist"? Anyone care to recommend a mail order repair person?

Thanks!

Thanks for the responses. For power I have tried a battery and a Pedal Power with the higher voltage (ACA) setting.

I'll try cleaning the switch and if that doesn't work I'll take to a service center. I did not see service information the first time I looked at the Boss site, but I found it the second time.

We can probably help...

Try cleaning the switch first, but my guess is that it won't make a difference - if the LED is on, the switch has worked.

What, exactly, was happening when the effect worked for a brief time?

Hi JohnnyG!

What I was really asking was (sorry for being imprecise)... what were the external factors that made it work? Was the LED on? How was the pedal powered? What had you just done immediately before it worked to make it work?

How long did it work for?

Hello Laurie,

When the pedal worked briefly the LED was on. It was powered with a battery. I had simply and somewhat randomly been stepping on the pedal to switch on and off. For a brief period (approximately 1 second) between pops and cracks the effect came on.

A friend I loaned the pedal to reported a similar experience, but I have not been able to repeat it.

I can also get the LED to light up using a Pedal Power, but the effect does not work with the Pedal Power. Note that when using the Pedal Power with the DM-2 I have the toggle set for the higher ACA adapter type voltage.

Thanks for your help.

Here's an update.

I do not have contact cleaner and I have not made it to a store to purchase any so I have not tried that.

I tried powering the pedal with a Boss model ACA-120G adapter and my Pedal Power again. Using these power supplies I could only get the LED to flicker dimly when pressing the switch repeatedly.

With a battery the LED comes on sporadically, there is often no signal (sound) from the guitar with the LED on or off and I have not been able to get it to produce any effected sound.

Thanks to all of you for your advice.

I think it may be time to get the pedal to a professional. Should I send it to Boss?

Are you confident enough to take the back off the pedal and try some tests?

If so... take the back off and swing the board out. Use a piece of wire to (carefully!) briefly short out the switch. Does it reliably turn on and off using this method?

I'll see what I can do and report back...

It will probably be a few days before I have the time to try this.

Thank you.
