I have an offer to buy a Marshall 4x12 box: JCM 900 Lead 1960 B The seller says it's equipped with four Celestion Vintage Speaker 12T-75 Speaker.
I've searched a bit but I didn't found 12T-75 Vintage but only 12T-75. Does anybody knows if these Vintages exist and if yes, what's the difference to the "normal" 12T-75 speakers?
I've read some comments on harmony-central.com about the 12T-74 Speaker and some say they sound harsh. What do you think?
PS: The amp is a Marshall JTM-60 (tube) combo (some day exchanged with a Marshall top). |

Hi...i've never heard of 75's being described as 'vintage' before... most marshall amps and cabs use celestion speakers and apart from the original 'thames ditton' label on the originals, the only vintage speaker that they make(as far as i'm aware) is the 'vintage 30' which is really a current model and rated at 60 watts handling.... ...i would hazard a guess that the cab is a few years old and that the seller is trying to put a bit of spin to bump up the asking price... ..i remember that gary moore was a fan of the 75 speaker in his cabs for a long time and i would describe the sound as a bit more 'aggresive' that the older greenback from the 70's...but the plus side is it has a bigger wattage handling rating as marshall heads often punch above their weight in regards to output and a lot of guys in the 60's and 70's blew speakers as lot as the older ones were rated at 20 or 25 watts per speaker(this is of course applies if your planning on running a marshall head(in the future) flat out into it... )..for normal everyday use it would be fine, some people like lower rated speakers as they break up earlier if your looking for a dirty sound,i have never used 75's but i have vintage 30's in a 2x12 with a marshall jmp head and i find that they are a lot louder and cleaner than the greenbacks i took out..i hope to make a open back 2x12 in the future for the greenbacks as i'm not a big fan of closed back cabs 'cause i find they are too loud and the sound is a bit boxy and tight sounding for me and my style..but this is ony a personal thing....if you are looking for a 4x12 check to see if the cab is plywood or chipboard/particleboard/MDF..etc..ply is stronger as supposed to be better sounding and you could haggle with the seller over the speakers not being 'vintage'..secondhand marshall cabs go here in ireland for around 400/500/ euro but i've seen some coming down in price as most places are too small for gigging tham and you really need some nice fellow band members or roadies to lug these bad boys around....unless your name is arnie.... hasta la vista bro' and good luck...

Actually, the vintage 30's are rated at 70 watts each. It has more pronounced midrange and a little less shrill highs making it sound a lot smoother. Actually it's the speaker of choice of a lot of metal/rock bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slash just to name some. The speaker is also a lot louder then the standard G12-75T.
So the seller is either mistaken or plain lying when he mentions the vintage part, which they are probably not. If it is a vintage 30 equipped cabinet it says so on the little gold label on the front. Otherwise, those stock speakers aren't bad at all. |

Yesterday I opened the box and it has four G12-T75 speakers. The seller just mixed it up.
BTW, I bought it and together with my Marshall JTM-60 combo it sounds very good. The combo has three 10" speaker and now the overall sound has both bass and highs. |

Well done ... enjoy the cab... the spread of sound you must be getting with that many speakers hooked up must be awesome....
