OK - the wierd part: for years, picks always slipped from my fingers until I discovered blue-tack (the gooey substance you use to put up posters) brilliant stuff, just use little pieces on both sides of the wide edge of the pick, & never drop a pick again. Replace as needed. Or am I just strange?

Hi redundant
Try getting some Gorilla Snot, MUCH Stickier.

Here's some links from my original posting.

Hi Jack
Nice simple mod, that you do to your picks.
I guess you could do it anytime, unlike the 3 small holes that I drill into my slippery picks.
Do you use a Stanley type knife, or just any kitchen knife?
Don't worry, I won't ask you is its a SS Knife, or if it was MIJ.

Thanks for the tip.
I still have to try out, the one I found last night, it was about 3am, so I guess you can see why, I didn't try it out straight away.

im EXREMELY anal about picks. believe it or not, they can make a huge difference on your sound. i like the Tortex feel. picks like the Fender California ones and other waxed picks are way too slippy for my liking. and the shape has to be teardrop, but with a pointed tip. and by pointed i mean like almost sharp at the edge, not your standard pick.

I do have a plectrum question, I still have a 'Sharkfin' one from a few years back, very thin and I liked it for gentle strumming, but I could never work out if the hooked 'fin' part or the serrated edge had any practical use. Do they?

Hi guirat
Puff of smoke when you light them???
What ever would make you try that out???
Am I getting too old to understand,
or is it part of a stage act.
or is it, from a rebellious youth?

I have a shark-fin pectrum as well, I guess you just asked the exact same question, that I have been thinking about for all these years.
I hope someone in the know has an answer.

Its actually a tip I got from one of Dimebag Darrell's first columns with Guitar World, but I didn't remember about it until I was looking through some old magazines at my parents house over the Christmas holidays. I'll be there this weekend, I still have all my old Guitar Player, Guitar World, Guitar For the Practicing Musician, and Guitar School issues at their house, I'll have to look through more to find any other lost gems....

I just use whatever is sharp enough to make a few scratches on a pick, and I just like it because it can be done almost anywhere at anytime, especially since I usually don't have issues with grip. Plus, while I remember when Gorilla Snot was first introduced in the early 90s, I have never been a big fan of any excess materials possibly gunking up my guitar, pickups, knobs, and/or strings, so I always steered away from that stuff and other stuff like Finger Ease...maybe I'm just old school, but I figure if your strings are making too much noise either you need to change strings or work on your technique....

But I agree with Stratosphere, I am very particular about my picks, especially since these days I am very used to and comfortable with Dunlop Tortex Sharp picks. But in the past I have used all kinds of picks of various materials, shapes, sizes, and thicknesses before finally finding what I was looking for all these years. Picks are one of the most overlooked tools for getting your sound, but luckily they are relatively cheap, so you can experiment with little expense.

A tip when looking for the perfect pick: If you find a material you like, but not the shape, check with the manufacturers website for all the different kinds of picks they make, as Dunlop makes a wide variety of picks, but retailers will often just stock the best sellers. I cannot find Tortex Sharps anywhere locally, but once I saw the shape was available on Dunlops website, I knew that was the pick I was looking for all these years, and it didn't take me long to find a store with them online...

Dr.Bob, do you live near Wolf Creek? I just saw that movie recently, and thought I'd ask

Wolf creek is in Western Australia (WA) it is about 3 hours flight from Melbourne.
I live in the South Eastern parts of Melbourne in the state of Victoria (Vic). Not too far from RRV-10

According to what I found out, that movie was mostly shot in bush area outside of South Australia (SA), even that is about an hours flight from Melb.
and about another 2 hours flight from Perth in WA.
I think Ronster is from SA

It's very civilized here where we live, nothing like the Mick Dundee movies that you see of Australia.

Most of the population, lives within one hours drive of the coast.
The central parts of Aust. can be desolate & barren, or covered in bushland. some parts are desert, just like US in some ways.

And we have electricity.
(sorry mate, I get asked by people from overseas, that have seen the outback Aust. Movies.
Lots & Lots of great beaches, sunshine & some stunning bikini babes.

Sorry if I lowered your hopes, & expectations, about knowing Mick Dundee.
But I play with his brothers sometimes....

What parts are you from?

Regards Dr. Bob

I am from Maryland, though my parents are from Thailand, and I live in Virginia, about 2 hours outside of Washington DC....Anyways, I'm into horror movies, and just saw Wolf Creek, so I thought I'd ask...

Sorry to derail the pick topic a little bit....

In regards to the shark fin picks, supposedly all sides of those picks are made picking, but personally I have never had much luck using anything but the regular point the one time I had one of those picks...

I've seen (online, never in stores) brass, stainless steel, aluminium picks et al. What do you guys think of their applicability regarding tone, longevity, etc?

I've used a few in the past. I think they sounded pretty good from what I recall and they will last forever, but your strings get beat up a bit more from metal picks. So you might save money on picks, you might be buying more strings, or you might get great tone from metal picks as long as your strings hold up...

1. Couldn't they come up with a more disgusting name?
2. This is Istanbul - either you can't find it or they charge 3x more for it.

For the most part I use Dunlop .46

I've wondered about those sharkfin picks too. Have never been able to find out if the edge is for anything at all.

Some people used stone picks in the early 80s. I remember a mate spent £10 on one of those. During the first band rehersal he dropped it on the floor and it broke. I can understand why they were a short lived phenomenon

Hi redundant
Just a little off topic.
One of my best friends - Jozef.
Moved back to Turkey about 2.5 years ago.
He is In Bodrum near the Aegean Sea, you can see the bay from his balcony.
It's about 500 to 800 meters from his house.

I miss his friendship very much.
So we email each other, almost every day.

I am looking forward to to Visiting Turkey & Bodrum, one day soon.

Hi Dr.Bob, redundant & all

We have in Mexico a product with a similar name (Moco de Gorila), but it is a hair styling gel! No need to say it's extremely strong. So, redundant, if you think it has a disgusting name then try to put it in your hair!!
