Hi all
I didn't want to take Apples for Jonah's thread off topic so i thought i'd get the ball rolling if anyone is interested..this ad appeared on a local buy/sell site in the last few days...i've also noticed a big rise in the sale of copies that look like the real thing and as jack pointed out in the other thread all you need is the sticker thingy for the headstock
http://www.gumtree.ie/dublin/33/54383833.html
Not saying there is anything untoward about the ad but i think some unscrupulous person could use something like this to fool people less knowledgeable about guitars...i've also seen Made in China Gibsons LP's for sale that look exactly like the real thing in the pics even with the inlays and the name on the headstock..some young guy or girl starting out might not realise and end up paying full whack for a ringer..... .....

If these guitars are advertised as 'the real thing' it's just wrong, but if they clearly state that they are replica's... I just don't like the fake sticker on the headstock.
There are some really good luthiers out there (Haar, Rebelrelic), who build good guitars for a reasonable price. Customshop Fenders/Customshop Gibsons are really expensive. These guys offer the same building & sound quality, but at a lower price, which is good (in my opinion). |

Hi FRANZONI, I read somewhere that there are more 60's custom color strats that are fakes than real! Most guys in the biz won't buy unless they can see in person and disassemble! Oh and I saw one of those Chinesse Gibbys in person, it's tough to tell! They look real, and some guys would rather pay $600 for a fake than pay $3000 for the real deal. |

Sort of on topic, but a but off topic...I don't know about the other forums you may visit, but on the one's I do, I am amazed at how often, pretty much weekly, there are thread by people who bought something off eBay, and now are wondering if its fake. I mean, yes there are some counterfeits out there that look so close to the real thing, you pretty much think its the real thing...
But I mean the ones from people who may have just won/bought a 70s Fender/Gibson on eBay, but had no clue as to what to look for before buying/bidding on it in order to verify it is what the listing says it is. Now they want someone to help them figure out if its real now...I mean this is a bit of an exaggeration, but a scenario like this where someone wins/buys on a "stock 70s Fender Strat", and then wonders if the florescent neon green finish was a stock color offered by Fender in the 70s....
I mean I do feel bad for some people as you can tell they are newbies or just got robbed by a good thief/counterfeiter, but with some others, I'm thinking "you just got a bad feeling now?"....
Anyways, just sort of venting...
Do your research is all I can say... |

I remember a guy i knew who bought a 70's strat one time another player who was a lot older than us told us it was a fake..now this was back in the mid 80's...his theory was that "the strat was too light"....i've played 70's strats that have varied in bodyweight more so than guitars from other eras...we were always told by older players to stay away from 70's strats and and LP's as they were crap i bought my '67 Fender Coronado II at that time for 70 quid (about 100 euro)personally i think what happened with a lot of 70's era Fenders and Gibsons was QC went out the window thats why some of them are horrible and mistaken for fakes..although i don't think floresent green wasa standard colour.. ..i saw a 70's strat for sale before christmas that was going for the same price as a 2nd hand deluxe strat and less than a custom shop model..i just knew by looking at it and the case it was real..ya know the little things that you get with age,the stuff than no matter how hard they try they can't do in a custom shop...BTW i had a lend of A Rory Gallagher Strat and while a good guitar there is no way you would mistake it for a real roadworn 60's strat... i don't think guys will go out of their way to forge a 70's guitar that might be worth only a little more than a current model...i would be MUCH more wary of anything that claimed to be from the 50's or 60's...
P.S my first 'real' strat was one of those new jap Fenders at the time..a '62 reissue that were 'crap' and now so sought after..of course i sold it a good few years back.... ...... |
