as we all know, the rubber grommet that interacts with the battery access thumbscrew tends to wear out or fall apart (or is sometimes AWOL on used pedals). FYI, a close replacement should be available at most larger/'big box' hardware stores (Crown Bolt Inc.'s size 5/16" grommet, made of neoprene rubber; look in the 'fasteners' aisle). of the 3 sizes I tried (9/32", 5/16" and 3/8"), the 5/16" size was best fit.

Great tip. I've got 1 or 2 pedals that is in need of a new grommet. My local harware stores aren't great but I'll see if I can test this out.

If the part that Roland uses is actually a rubber grommet, I would assume that it is metric considering that the effect pedals are made outside the U.S. I'm going to look into metric sizing.

I agree, Roland undoubtedly used all metric-sized components for their pedals, but metric items aren't always easy to find in the usa. please do let us know if you can find a source....

I think I might poke my nose around town to find some rubbers () myself. I ripped one off my Ds1 when it broke and I have 2 other pedals that need a new one. It would be awesome if I could find the same ones BOSS use, or ones that are identical.

Are you sure these things are called "grommets?" I went to The Home Depot and they had a big Crown Bolt, Inc. section and a guy there who worked in fasteners, and he said that what I was looking for he believed was not called a grommet. He proceeded to show me various forms of rubber washers and I told him that those were not what I was looking for. If I had brought in a sample it might have helped.

FYI, Lowe's didn't seem to have anything like what The Home Depot had as far as a big section dedicated to stuff. All that I found was different themes on the same basic design of rubber washer scattered in a few places.

I'll give it another shot tomorrow. I have music theory homework to do.

at the HD I went to, they were sold on the fasteners aisle, but off to the side in the drawers/bins where specialty screws and metric screws are sold. Crown Bolt calls them "grommets," but they might be called a different name elsewhere. below is the text (including UPC code no.) from a package:

GROMMET

5/16"
7 9 [not sure what that means]
NEOPRENE RUBBER
DR# - 25 BIN - B
Dr# - 946 1 Pcs
04 08 27 13 02

UPC code: 0 30699 73558 7
CROWN BOLT INC

let me know if you don't see it next time....

Thanks, that should be helpful. If nothing else I can have the order some in quantity and I will sell to whoever needs some at a reasonable price.

I went to my Ace Hardware location and they had rubber grommets but they were not of the right size and shape to bend and fit into the hole in a Boss pedal. I wasn't too clear how the 5/16" spec applied to these parts as each one hard a big bold number, such as 1/4", but none of them had a big bold number that said 5/16", and they had other numbers for thickness, outer (or inner, I forget) diameter, etc. Hopefully when I go back to The Home Depot I can show them what I have and they will show me the right part, and I will also bring in all of the information that you typed in for me.

I should have indicated the shape of these things... they are circular, but can easily be bent /squished into the required oval shape.

and I'm not sure what 5/16" refers to either; since they're made of a compliant material, they're difficult to measure with any accuracy....

Ps_trash, I'm finally getting back to this business. If I were to get a metric size, should it be smaller or bigger than what you have now?

Walrus, that's a good question... assuming they're measured the same way regardless of U.S./metric units, and that there's no conversion error due to "nominal" sizes, then the closest metric size to 5/16" = 7.9375 mm = 8 mm rounded up.

thus, my recommendation would be to find an 8 mm grommet (again, with the assumptions stated above). if you find one, please do let us know how it works!

I'm going to HD in Miami to see if I can find it today. ps_trash, could you do an edit on that post to correct the "NEOPREME" part? That should be an M, not an N. Just click on the icon that looks like a sheet of paper with a pencil on it on your post. I'll rewrite history on this one later, too.

Thanks!
Peace,
The Walrus (I AM)

The text on the bag the part comes in does indeed erroneously say "NEOPREME"... pawnshop_trash has the text verbatim.

F___ed up. Sorry for the confusion.

I have a friend who works for a (I think) distribution center for Home Depot. He told me that Home Depot's stock of even simple things such as this can vary from region to region and even store to store. They don't have any Crown Bolt rubber grommets anywhere in Miami-Dade County. And Crown Bolt products are only sold through The Home Depot, they are "a Home Depot company" according to their website. I guess I can try to put in a special order. Does anyobody know how much these things cost so that I can get an idea of how likely they are to place an order for me?

Thanks,
William
