I remember a while back, someone posted a question about having avatars.

I have been quiet on this forum for a year now, because, well, I'm addicted to Second Life.

Second Life (if you don't know) is a digital society where you can run a business, hangout, go clubbing, etc but what's pretty cool, is a thriving crop of live musicians performing there.

Wouldn't it freaking rock to have bossarea in Secondlife, where you could all stick your PC mic in front of your amp and jam (Lag would likely kills jamming) or conduct workshops and teach how to use effects... hear a DC-2 vs a DC-3??? And interract in live chat (voice OR text???)

(this is not an ad for secondlife)

Hi starr36
Good to see you back for a while at least...?

And meant in the nicest possible way....

Bossarea -- is my Second Life.....

I hope you don't mind me asking...
How many Linden or real dollars have you spent here in Secondlife?
what is the Linden exchange rate?
Did you buy land & home? what have been your achievements there?
Do you trade in any goods?

Regards Dr. Bob

Good Questions!

First, i joined second life because I work in banking, and I was curious about the virtual economy - but, you see ... you get ah "distracted"

I have only put $10.00 USD = 2500 lindens, rate is roughly between 250/270:1 - I have played various chance games like Trivia and some 'moneyballs" and well, I think the most of money I had, was about $3500 Lindens, and i'm down to $1600 Lindens. I have done very well getting great clothes and everything else free, so that is not an issue.
I never bought land because the tier fees are too high, ie. for any amount of land that is useful, it would be at least coming in at over $10USD per month.
I am haae not engaged in business at all, as I don't have anytime. It is a very time consuming place.

The biggest problem is that they created a cross over to Real World with the currency being pegged to the US Dollar. There are NO regluating authorities in SL, so they have had to ban Gambling, and recenlty there were failurs of Banks becaues the blatantly performed Ponzi schemes. Had the USD and LInden never been linked, there would nt have been a fraud. One of the bank, reportedly had collected 200Million lindens or about $750,000 Real USD worth, and ran off with the money. The promised interest rates of 10% and up per month. A big fiasco, because people want to sue Linden Labs or whatever. I think the place is a total buyer beware situation so those who got burned on a Ponzi scheme always get burned because of their own greed.

It just requires an enormous amount of time to engage in any real commerce, but there are peeps who do that.

Forgive me. What is the purpose of a digital society ? What purpose does it serve ? I recently posed this issue to someone wanting
that moronic "game" Guitar Hero. Think how good you could be on a real guitar instead of a toy. Life is for living in the real world,
not a made up pretend land. I am incredibly cynical about this crap.
You said yourself Starr36, " I am addicted to Second Life. " What is
so wrong with the First ?

Peace

great questions

think of a computer game, that you can play with thousands of people that you can create a new society in. You can build structures, create businesses, hone your programming and artistic design skills.

the disturbing part is ... there are peeps who live there 12-15 hours a day. THAT is a problem. I am not 'addicted' like that at all.

thats it.

either you like that or not.

it has nothing really to do with NOT wanting to live here at all; just a really unique type of interactive chat game environment.

that's it. and its a lot of fun!
