I have been reminiscing a bit about my 'experimental' guitar days in the late 80's early 90's and wondering if anyone has had some wonderful creations in their hands i.e. a Frankenstein you would be proud to wear in your band's debut video.
While I limited my work to changing pickups and wild paint jobs, a friend of mine 'spared no workshop tool' when he took to modifying a guitar.
A solid-ash body stratocaster met its demise one day due to the pain it caused the player, so out came the tools. "Its just too damn heavy". Taking a wood plane, the first thing to do was carve the body about 2cm thinner and shaping it like an ibanez, so around the edges, it was only 1.5cm thick but where the electronics mount, it was about 3cm thick. Next, take out a hole-saw kit and randomly drill 2 Inch holes through the body for a lovely 'swiss cheese' visual effect. Next, find a piece of industrial computer grille (you know, the ones with the little holes about 1mm in diameter all evenly spaced) and cut it in the shape of a strat pickguard, cut out SSH, 5 way switch and VTT holes. Route bridge pickup cavity ALL THE WAY THROUGH the body so you have no issues fitting a strong humbucker in there. Repeat for the two single coil pickups. Grab a "C" shape Tele neck, and shave about 1/2 an inch off the back, but don't go too deep as you DO NOT want to expose the truss rod. Sand all the wood nice and smooth. Get a can of clear aquamarine stain and soak the body with it, when dry, clearcoat. Find some Ibanez "gem" florescent volume/Tone knobs and use them. Mount pickups in pickguard (leave the ugly pickup covers off and expose the coils. Mount electronics. Mount all hardware, the neck and adjust the neck tilt. Plug into AMP and play.
This guitar DID exist ... and it DID produce insane tones. Due to the metal pickguard, even some rather strange sound effects were achieved by dropping the whammy bar and rubbing the metal with any other kind of metal.
Please DON'T tell me that this is the one guy that would "DO THAT" to a strat!!!!!
