Hi :-)

I have a few Boss pedals, some good, some bad... but one that I never use is the LM-2. I saw a few here praising it, and I'm just wondering if maybe I missed the point. I understand compression, so that's not the problem (I use a CS-2 at the beginning of my chain, and basically never turn it off). How is the LM-2 different, and can I get any magic out of it?

Cheers, Fylthy

the LM-2 is a lot like a comp, but just eliminates the dynamic peaks, and adds no boost. Turned up, it could give you some squishiness, but it's definitely more subtle than the CS-2 - maybe to your liking?

Edit: Welcome to the forum!! It's the best there is...

Thanks for the welcome Verivorax!

Maybe I'll spend more time comparing the two this weekend. I've never been dissatisfied with the CS-2 so never really thought to replace it, I mostly bought the LM-2 because it was cheap, in mint condition and at the time I had it in my head it might be fun to collect Boss pedals

i use the LM-2 on the whole time on my board. i'm not using it as a normal compressor as i have both the threshold and release set pretty high. i also set the level high. what this does is push my amp a little more and it seems to squeeze more tone out if that makes sense? but with the thres and release set high you only get limiting kicking in properly on the louder passages.
and it adds a touch of peak smoothing to the output.
fantastic pedal, couldn't live without it

Thanks guys. I can see that collecting Boss pedals can be dangerous territory, but I'm already off to a good start. Apart from the LM-2 and CS-2 I also have a CE-1, VB-2, PW-2 and XT-2 (the last two I thought might be interesting even though they seem to be poorly regarded). I see a SG-1 on eBay in Australia now at just $249 and with no bids... 12 months ago that would have been going for much, much more. Seems to be a buyers market at the moment... I'd snap it up myself but I have my eyes on something else at the moment.

i like the LM-2; i think it's a very underrated pedal.
(i don't have one any more as i replaced it with a Boss CL-50.)

i actually prefer limiting to compression in many cases.
the LM-2 has other uses too; the tone control is a very useful addition.

another thing i liked to do with the LM-2 was to create swells...
i can't remember the settings, but what i would do is (usually with an overdrive or fuzz in front of it) use the LM-2 to really slam the level down - you still hear a little bit of the note attack. if you then hold the note/chord the release swells back up to the original unlimited volume. it sounds really cool if you add delay or reverb afterwards too.

(i hope i explained that in a way which makes sense!)

Not just a good start a GREAT start. Your next pedal should be a CE-2. It'd be a great addition to your little collection.

My CS2 sits unused
