I have noticed that the paint on some Boss pedals are quite sensitive to physical abusement. DM-2 and DSD-2/3 comes to my mind. DM-2 chips easily and DSD-2/3 scratches easily. Anyone else having opinions on this? Sturdy ones seems to be FZ-3, CE-3 and perhaps DD-2.

Hi Goran 7 guys
My MZ-2 Digital Metalizer, is really bad, It seems to get worse, every year that I own it.
The Black paint is just flaking off in pin head sizes bits, all over the pedal.
It even comes off, if I just handle it (gently)
The 3 or 4 that I know of, are all like mine, or are starting to look like mine.
Regards Dr. Bob
PS. How is your LM-2?

The paint on both of my LM-2s sits well were it should! As this pedal was never a popular one most of them are in quite good condition. After really trying it out I like it a lot, used as a light compressor it really shines.
My MZ-2 has all the paint on it, but it was I near mint condition when I bought it and I keep good care of my pedals.
This opens for why are some of the paints used more sensitive than others??? MZ-2 has some metallic paint but DM-2 has not.

ill bet that its not the paint itself, but other factors. for instance i have a BD-2 thats all flakey and chipping but im pretty sure that the previous owner got it wet at some point. im sure where its stored has a lot to do with it too. i doubt that Boss used different paint brands for any one or two models of their pedals.
i think this was mentioned before but it always seems that highly used pedals such as the DM-2 and OD-1 always seem to have chips and in bad shape but thats probably just because they are good and used a lot, lugged around, bumping and grinding each other etc and "crappier" pedals like the LM-2 and XT-2 always seem to be mint. but thats because theyre sitting on a shelf.. meh |

I have personal experience of how easy its for DM-2 to chip, so I believe that the paint on this is weaker. I have seen a lot of DD-2s and most of them are in quite good condition, and I suppose DD-2s are used a lot. If you take a good look at the finishes of Boss pedals (if you have more than a couple) you actually see that the paint used differs, FZ-3 is something completely different from for example CH-1.

Hi Goran,
You are a star with bringing such details up eh? I know about the difference in paintjobs on the older pedals, but the quality itself of the paint?
Anyway I do believe you, my DD-2 is quite a used one but the paint has not worn that much.
Talking about the DM-2 and metalic paint, do we not feel that the colour of the DM-2 does have a hint of metalic in its paint?
I have an HM-2 and a DC-2 which are very worn with regards to their paint, but I do think their former owners abused them quite a lot, so really, this does not count. |

Well, Fender collectors debates a lot on finishes And even the filler and undercoat, and lots of other small details. I just got to think about it yesterday when I cleaned some of my pedals.

| I have a PH-1r witha horrible paint job. I belive it has been exposed to a damp environment though as there is some rust on the i/o jacks. Looks like paint is lifting from underneath on its own, ie, there are no scratches of dings but the paint is kind of lifting and wrinkling itself off. I have a CE-2 that also appears to have a very thin paint on the pedal switch but thick everywhere else, all the DD-2s MIJ that have been in my hands have had very good thick ding resistant paint. hmm. TR-2 seems to have very easy to chip paint. HR-2 and DC-3 good paint; an SD-1 MIJ appeared to have thin paint too. The Thin Paints MIJ pedals I refer to serial date code to 1984-1985 ... |

| I bought a new ODB-3 and the first time out of the box I realized that the paint looked really thin, so I rubbed it and the paint was gone. Right through the overcoat [light yellow] through the undercoat [more of a dark yellow-ish orange]through the primer [a silver/white color] down to the metal. I'm guessing it was just a mess up, I doubt they would allow that on their pedals. |

| Hi. What kind of paint is used on the Boss pedals? Is it the same from the early days? |

| maybe pedals are kinda like cars. if you neglect the paint, over the years it gets kinda crappy and starts to peel and that sunlight alone can fade a color to white. i know most of my older pedals are duller than they used to be. |

My intension when I started this topic was that Boss has used different types of paint (and quality) at the same time period. I think they have. During this topic some of you has been discussing paint differences over the years, this is also interesting. I had a close look at some new and some old pedals and can confirm that most of the earlier pedals had a thicker coat than the later ones. But not always, I have a silver screw CE-2 that has a thin layer of paint on the body but not on the foot switch. And paints are aging just as on old guitars, its of course logic that it is so.

i took a look at all my pedals and the only ones that i noticed to be rather cheap are my 2 newer (2004 and 2005) pedals. they are a nS-2 and TU-2. i wonder if them both being white has something to do with it. but the paint looks thin and even feels kind of flakey.
i looked at all my other ones and they seemed to have regular paint. ranging from 78 -present |

It wouldn't surprise me if the paint has changed over the years for various reasons like different paint suppliers and stricter environmental issues. Some of the paint seems like paint, the other paints seem like pastels or feel like chalk... |
