| I am curious as to why some pedals, when first given initial power, start with the effect turned on? I have both a Boss DS-1 as well as a Boss DD-7 in my signal chain, and when I give power to my Voodoo Lab Pedal Power both of these pedals are on. I can leave the pedals in the off position when turning everything off, but the next time I come back to practice these pedals will be turn on again. Any knowledge or information regarding this issue will be much appreciated. Thanks. |

I was going to post this:
My chain
Input>V-wah>TU-2>CS-3>OD-3>MARSHALL SHREDMASTER>MD-2>GE-7>NS-2>CE-2>PH-3>TR-2>DD-7>Output
And when I power up - My Vwah,OD-3,GE-7,PH-3 and DD-7 turn on despite all the other pedals being off (like they should be)
So I assume its a common problem - it annoys me a bit tho, The way i have to do some tap dancing straight away ): |

There's something inside those particular Boss pedals that causes this to happen. I don't know much about electronics at the component level so I can't really tell you anything more than I remember reading about it in another thread on here.
IIRC, you could "fix it" by doing something to one of the resistors or caps... but I could also be wrong; so don't hold me to this.
I'm sure one of our resident techies (Laurie?) will be around and can provide some more insight soon. |

Boss pedals don't really have an on/off switch as such, just an electronic "change of state" switch (ie if pedal is on it changes the circuit to off and visa versa). It's a boolean logic switch in an electronic circuit and isn't an actual physical switch. This means that the pedal does not retain it's state when powered down. When powered back up again the pedal is reset and will start in a predetermined state (ie either on or off depending on what the people at Boss decided for each particular pedal). Some are always on when powered up and some are always off.
When you have a true bypass switch (3PDT) the switch itself is physically either on or off so it retains it's state when powered down. |

Welcome to the forum from Australia.
With the older pedals, it all has to do with the state,
the flip flop circuit in the pedal wakes up in.
This has been discussed many times before, & even recently.
With some suggestions on swapping the resistor/cap positions
in the flip flop.(with pictures).
So it wakes up in the opposite state.
I'll see if I can find the link a bit later, it's probably buried
in the Mods & Technical section.

Can you turn an RC-2 off? Or do you mean the looper starts automatically? (Mine doesn't do that.) |
