This very thing drove me nuts a few months ago.
I was harvesting cheapo pedals for parts, and plopping them in my little spares bins. Unfortunately, one of the donor pedal's e-lytics were just done...
The recipient pedals all worked with the dud caps, but they would sputter on transients or hard chords, to the point that I thought I had the polarity on the caps incorrect. After double and triple checking, I finally figured out that all of the "infected" pedals had bad 10 uF caps from a single donor pedal...
After that experience, I chucked all of the e's that I pulled (unless they were a funky unique value, like a 3.3 uF) and got motivated and placed a decent sized order with Mouser. The e's that I decided on are all NP's and were so cheap that I don't know why I didn't do it sooner. They were certainly cheaper than all of the MF caps that I ordered.
