| Great site! I love the sound of mellotron, it played a big part in the early King Crimson sound (one of the greatest bands ever in my book). |

A while back, I ran across a site from a British fellow who tracked down every single example of the Mellotron appearing in a recording, and cataloged them all -- along with some rather opinionated reviews for some of the bands (I remember in particular he really had a go at Marillion and Asia ). If I find the link again, I'll follow up with it here.
I like the intro to "Watcher Of The Skies" and "Court Of The Crimson King" for the sound of the Mellotron. I'd love to have one of those to tinker around with, but I would imagine getting an original would be prohibitively expensive now. From what I remember in my reading travels, the power supplies on them were not particularly reliable.
edit: found it http://www.planetmellotron.com/reviews.htm

Yes stahlhart, always liked the sound of the Mellowtron, have a little EKO organ which can sort of approximate some of those mellowtron sounds. The actual keys of this funky little organ are the same as the ones of the mellowtron in your first link, complete with springs. Very Funky feel, but not great for playing fast passages!! |
