i know a lot of people like this pedal, but after a few months, im failing to connect with it.

its too sterile, and yes i know its digital, but what can you say except for that this is classic example of each to his own.

anyone had any similar experiences, where you bought something exciting, only to be slightly dashed?

i'm still looking for a reverb pedal/unit for my rig,i've heard conflicting reports about the RV2/3/5 so i'm still a bit undecided......i found a pedal called 'mr springgy' on the web made by a guy called lee jackson which is supposed to be analogue and pretty good in a fender blackface sort of way...the only thing is he's supposedly one of those guys who covers his circuit boards in some sort of gloop to stop anyone seeing how he made it,what happens if you have to replace something in years to come...?? sendng it back to a small workshop in somewhere in the U.S.A.is not really an option imho....so i'm still in the hunt for a reverb unit... even playing with the idea of an old alesis quadraverb etc although i would prefer something analogue if possible but i'm open to suggestions another factor is cost....three young kids is eating into my G.A.S. budget at the mo'.....

EHX HolyGrail is nice..

my reverb solution (as I lack the MIJ Boss Reverbs) was to add an old 60s 5w amp w/ a huge reverb tank. Use some stereo pedal(s) and dial in some kind of mix..

okay... so here are my two cents and a half

I have the RV-2 and while really loving the sound... the unit can be quite noisy on some settings. - then again I'm picky about that.

did anybody test Danelectro's spring king ?

http://www.danelectro.com/effects_7.html

that's supposed to be analogue

I'm using the DM-2 right now and it can sound VERY reverbish with higher repeat rates

Spring King is really bad sounding; I bought one cheap, had it for a couple of weeks, and sold it. I have never heard such an uninspiring reverb, period.
I owned a Fender Reverb unit for a couple of years, this is the King of spring reverb! They are way overprized for sure.

As for the RV-3, I tested it yesterday and I didnt like it that much. I had the same impression when I bought it. Its OK but I like RV-2 a lot better.
In fact I mostly use RV-5, I like the plate setting very much. And combined with a DD-2 you have a really good combination.

EHX Holy Grail is also very, very good. I dont own one but I have tested it, its on my wants-list.

I used my RV-3 a LOT when it first arrived, but I haven't kicked it into the chain for weeks now... it just kinda sits there. I can't tell you why.

Most of my delay comes from a my crappy little Behringer DD100 - sterile, but somehow useful.

happy:

i consider it "passable" as both a reverb and delay unit.

sort of like trying to get a clean tone w/ a super distortion pickup. never quite gets it perfect but can kinda do it...

i bought it as a reverb pedal but figured i could use it as a backup delay.

i feel that way about a lot of gear. acceptable as a backup, lacking as a primary.

yeah i traded my dd-5 for it, thinking i could have the best bits of the dd-5 and a bit more digital reverb aswell, zentropa, you hit the nail on the head, it will do as back up. i have a dm-2, which i adore, but sometimes i want the warmth and tone of that but as pure reverb, i know you can kind of emulate reverb with the dm-2, well, 'ish', but you know....

I've been lookng for a servicable reverb for a while now. I'm using a Behringer DR100 until I find something warmer. The tank in my Marshall head is too "springy". I have an Alesis quadraverb GT I'm going to try, but it's not exactly a compact pedal...

happy:

i have my DM-3 on a pedalboard in my living room... and my RV-3 on a pedalboard in my bedroom :)

basically, i wanted soemthing with passable reverb and then i stumbled across the RV-3 for way cheaper than an RV-2 and figured i could use it as my bedroom delay pedal and my main rig reverb pedal if/when i actually wanted reverb (which is next to never).

Laurie:

sounds like you have a nice project for you... getting your quadraverb guts to fit into a boss-sized case :)

What you mentioned about the RV-2 is so true, not many people report on this but it is really true. Okay it sounds fine but a little noisy.

The RV-3 and RV-5 are very clean and almost unnatural. The trick to do is to put a DD-2 or DM-2 [or any delay really] and use a very short delay time, then use the reverb for a medium reverb time and the whole lot will sound a bit more natural.

I like an old DOD very much, very noisy and sorry, forgotten modelnumber, it is one of the first issue DOD's, it is red and does have tree knobs.

Why is this one good? Sounds natural, is almost like a very primitive delay [All reverbs are some sort of delay!!]

I guess people just using their pedals for live-applications will like the RV3 and RV5 as they can sound so huge, but in a way there is something lacking.

A good test for reverb is to get your guitarsound to sound like as you are playing in a room, or hall or church. Okay if you do not really know what this sounds like, you probably will not really know what kind of reverb you like. Use your ears, keep experimenting and buying different pedals and................you will find what you will like........... eventually

You know, I just got a Spring King and I absolutely love it. It is in fact a spring reverb (the springs are not just for the kick function), but there's also a digital section that has a subtle slap-back echo from what I understand. It all depends on what you want it to do, if you want long spacey washes of reverb it's definitely not the right piece of kit for the job. But for trashy, surfy reverb, it's incredible! While I'd love to get my hands on one, I'd never be able to afford a Fender Reverb unit, so for relatively cheap spring reverb the Spring King is a great alternative IMO. It just all depends on the kind of reverb you like.

The RV-3 was my first pedal of that nature, and I still have and use it. I like the Rooms and the Plate, but it's definitely a reverb of the "artificial" variety. I think it really shines in the delay+reverb sections though.

my favorite is to bring a guitar into church and crank runnin with the devil as the natural reverb is usually perfect.

they usually ask me to leave.
