I finally got round to troubleshooting this thing. When I saw there was a blown capacitor I decided to order up the schematic from Boss. It turned out that apart from the polarity protection diode and the capacitor nothing else was wrong. Finding out that the whole pedal is grounded through the tiny PCB that hosts the LED was however new to me. I spent an hour figuring out how to test the pedal without actually putting it back together again. I'm writing this post partly to document this fact in case I'll be taking apart a similar pedal later.
Getting everything back in the box turned out to be the hardest challenge. When I eventually managed to get the jacks in their holes and their nuts in place a wire broke and I had to remove them all again just to solder it back in place. I suddently remembered why I quit electronics and bacame a computer guy.
Anyway, after a bit more fiddling I eventually got it back together with no left over parts. I've played aruond with it for a while now and must say this thing is quite fun
