My Boss AW-2 gets really noisy when is close to my amp (1 foot). I've read that inductors are very sensitive to EMI/RFI. Do you guys think that if I replace the inductor (e.g. fasel) the pedal would become less sensitive to noise? Is there anything else I can do besides moving the pedal farther away from the amp? |

| I could be totally wrong, but I don't think the AW-2 has an inductor in it. I know the TW-1 does. |

It does have an inductor. |

How well grounded (earthed) is your setup?
Is the AW-2 being powered from a battery or an AC adapter?

I really don't know if my setup is well grounded. I am using a 1-Spot power adapter, and that goes to a power strip. I've tried powering the pedal with a battery to check if the noise was coming from the 1-Spot, but the noise was still there. |

What happens if you simplify your setup to
guitar --> AW-2 --> amp (either battery or 1-spot for AW-2 power; try both)
...or is this your current setup?
Thanks for the articles and your suggestions! I've tried that setup and I still get the noise. When I put the pedal close to the amp (less than 2 feet), it seems like noise gets amplified so you can hear a very loud "owaah-owaah" sound. I have a Cry Baby with a fasel inductor in my effects chain and it's very quiet, that's why I've been thinking that maybe by replacing the AW-2's inductor, I could solve the problem. |

Hi Guys I have emailed a few internal Pics of my my AW-2, to Bossarea, Thought you guys might like to see what's inside one. There definetly is a small inductor in the middle part of the board.
There is also an opto-coupler, you will see in the pics as well.
I have been having difficulty, uploading pics to this forum, with the version of Firefox, that I'm running.
We'll have to wait for Bossarea to post them to the thread.
Hope it somehow helps you guys out, I know I like looking at the internals of pedals..
Regards Dr. Bob

Hi Guys Thanks to Bossarea, He moved the Pics into the Virtual Directory, so I could Link to them & post them to this Thread. Thanks Heaps Bossarea. I have also linked to the slightly blurry pics, but I'll put them at the end. There are a heap; They are hi-res, so please be patient.
The Opto-Coupler is the black cylindrical device, part number HTV P873A in the Second pic, LHS, near the small transformer shaped inductor.
The Sharp IR9022 - 8 Pin DIP IC (IC5), is a Low Power Dual Op-Amp. datasheet is here: http://www.datasheetarchive.com/search.php?q=IR9022&sType=part
Regards Dr. Bob.

Told you there was heaps -- |

Hi Aetguitars
My pleasure.
As I said, I like looking at what's inside pedals as well. BTW that was my AW-2, not some pics off the Web.

Hi aetguitars I don't remember having any noise problems with the AW-2. It's after 11pm here so, I'll do a test during more reasonable hours to see if I get noise when I put the pedal near my valve amp.
How close is it when you start getting the hum.
I would take a guess that you might have an bad shield or poor quality shield, on one or more of your cable. I know curly type cords are notorious for noise, if you have one of those.
Have you tried it with other cables? Have you tried the same setup at another friends house? You may have poor earth connection on the power point that you are using.
Have you tried the pedal on it's own? Have you tried it with just a new 9V battery, to see if it's hum in your plug pack. have you tried using your friends cables?
But I'm guessing a poor or bad shield on your cables, they do break.
Regards Dr. Bob.
I know it's dumb, but this is post 1234 for me

I've tried different amps, cables, locations, batteries, power supplies, guitars... so I'm pretty sure the problem is the pedal itself. The AW-2 is the only pedal in my effects chain with this problem. On Harmony Central a lot of people complain about the pedal being noisy. I don't think it's noisy in the way that it generates noise, but in the way that it imports hum from any nearby source.
