I am not a Boss collector per se, and I pretty much use all the pedals I have as I see fit. However, I'm beginning to wonder if I should be picking up extras, so that I have 'player' versions and backups or possibly 'collector'versions with box/papers. I buy and trade a few every now and then because I either want to just check em out, but I do find tone/sound variations and I'll by a few of the same model, check em out, then keep the "best" sounding one and sell rest. I do keep a few DD-2s though, because that is the one pedal I can't live without.
What's the consensus here about Boss pedal values going up - which units particularly will increase the most (I'm pretty sure MIT DS-1 will likely never really see price upside as there are so many around) but because boss' products appear to be well made and well most were made in late 70s to late 80s (5million units sold upto Middle of 1988, and only 3million units since then (I think Boss is bragging about 8 million units sold) - what do you think about these things appreciating? |

Apart from the silver screw debate. The pedals that are in demand today will have a higher and higher pricetag as time goes on, that is for sure.
What might be different as time goes on is that more usable pedals that already are in demand today like the DM-2, DM-3 and DC-2, DC-3 and also old analog choruses like the CE-2 might actually overrun the Holy Grail gang in terms of value. Just simply because they are not only interesting from a collectors point of view, but also are very usable from a players point of view, just because they sound good.
As digital effects rules the world today, perhaps people as time goes on want to take a step back and start to appriciate analog pedals more and the unique sound they produce, and hence driving up the prices on those pedals. |

Thanks for bringing up Digital Effects, cause that's really what i'm wondering is if music is going to get so computerized, we'll lose the analog glow that is quintessentially encapsulated in an early run CE-2 for instance. Will digital takeover, or hopefully we'll see some amazing improvement in analog design forTONE sake and NOT manufacturing ease, of which the latter, I think Boss has pursued in recent years. |

| I have doubled up on DC-3, CE-2, PH-1 and OD-1, and have two of each. One of the DC-3 pedals is a NOS collectors piece with box and manual and the other one I use daily. I also have three MIJ DS-1 pedals in different versions. |

| With any sort of collection or collectable item, the value fluctuates between what the market states it worth, what the person selling it feels its worth, and what the person who wants it feels its worth, so its really hard to predict which pedals will have some type of value, but if you hear that they are going to discontinue something, it might be worth it to pick up a few. As far as digital, digital will only become collectable once they make a technology that will replaces digital, then maybe digital will be the new analog. |

| I would definitely pick up an extra copy of any pedal that I consider essential to my sound. personally I have 3 SD-1s (MIJ and now retired, AnalogMan/asymmetric clipping mod, and a tubescreamer clone), 2 PQ-4s (one in NM condition, the other I use), 2 FZ-2s (one of which I plan to mod for bass use, someday), 2 BF-2s (MIJ and MIT), and 2 CE-2Bs (MIJ with skirted knobs, and MIT). I also have 2 HM-2s at the moment, but will probably sell the one in lesser condition.... |

I'm not a collector, just a player, so one of each for the effect functions I use is enough for me (except for a pair of DD-2s, but both are in "player" condition).
I'm in agreement with StratoSphere about the EH-2; just got that one and really like it.
I'm also in agreement with Sunburst -- CE-2s in particular seem to really be generating a lot of bidding interest these days, and the last DC-2 I looked at was up over 30 bids... that kind of activity absolutely suggests that it's players more than collectors punting for these.
I wonder if Roland has some sort of patent related to dimensioning, as it seems highly bizarre to me that no other manufacturers have attempted to put similar units out. you'd think that there is enough demand out there for a digital dimensioning pedal at least.

I'm not a collector...
unless having only SYB is a kind of collection...
I'll see when a new SYB will be unleashed : if I buy it without need it, I would say I'm a part-time collector... |

| I have many pedals in pairs: DM-2, DC-2, PN-2, FZ-2, LM-2. One for playing and another for investment purposes. |

i think pedals, whatever the condition they are in, are both collectible and playable(with a few exceptions). To me, they only have intrinsic (non monetary) value. if it was about investment, id invest in oil instead. for the purposes of this discussion, lets look at a couple of the exceptions mentioned above..the sg 1, or the sp 1. i consider these vintage pedals useless, but they are worth big bucks. If i had them, theyd just take up space. And, i would have got better returns investing in well..anything else. I also have a theory about NOS pedals and beat up ones. I reckon the beat up ones sound better and thats why they get used more.

I am mainly a collector, playing mostly at home and occasional jamming. So I dont really need doubles, but I have some of various reasons. If I was playing more outside home I maybe double up DM-2, OD-1, DD-2, CE-2, DC-2 and some more. As owners of DM-2 may have noticed the finish is very fragile on this pedal. But I would not double up SP-1 or SG-1, I dont think this is very good pedals at all and would have no use for them as a player. Besides the price for doubles would be to much for me.. If I use rare pedals playing outside home I transport them with care and use them with care, I usually wrap them in bubble plastic sheets.

I've noticed this from monitoring auctions on Ebay. The DM-2s are very rarely in mint condition and compared to other pedals of the same age they're usually much more chipped. For a while I thought this was just because it's a good pedal and these are actually being used. The NF-1s or LM-2s on Ebay are mostly mint condition, probably because they're rarely used. Compared to other older pedals that have been properly used, the DM-2 does however look like it has a weaker finish. |
