| hey folks - this is way off topic but it is music-related and I thought some of you technical types might help me... I'm putting in-ceiling speakers in my newly renovated bathroom and I was just wondering what to do with them on the attic side to get the best sound? I'm thinking laying the insulation over them is a bad idea but then so is leaving them wide open (at least heating/ cooling wise). Should I put some sort of box over them? |

I don't know. At first thought one would think box them in to keep the dust and spider houses out of them, but in the bathroom environment enclosing them may create a moisture trap. Maybe we should ask Holmes on Homes |

No problem -- actually, I had the "?" there as a question to the original poster if the suggestion in the link would work. But I appreciate the clearification (I've never seen that particular home improvement show).

are they closed or open back baskets? i assume the are dual concentrics.
if they are open backed it would be best to build an inclosure for them. you can get the volume for a box by getting the thiele small parameters (good old aussies do it again!, and using them in a speaker enclouser design program to work it all out. you can downlaod some off the net. that way you will get the best performance and sound out of them.
you can build the box's out of MDF or ply. MDF is cheaper and is excelent as it dense/dead. then put some acoustic foam in them (you dont want any reflective surfaces. if thats all too much trouble then just put some acoustic faom over the back of the speakers.
pedals 4 pv was talking about moisture. are the speakers paper cone or poly/plastic stuff? rubber or fabric suspension? sealing the box in a think undercoat or even just wood glue will prevent the timber from absorbing moisture.
you can put alot of thought into speaker constuction. ive built a few over the years, most recently a pair of tower speakers with 2 8inch drivers, 1inch silk done tweeter and a 3inch wet dome midrange. its great fun and its a great feeling of acomplishment when you do something yourself!
ps. sorry if that was too much typing... |

Thanks for all the input, folks! I also posted this on an audio forum and no one replied!?
The speakers are concentric, a .75" swiveling silk dome tweeter in a 6 1/2" polypropylene woofer with a butyl surround. They are open basket. I think building an enclosure is a good idea, and I'm iterested in those "thiele small parameters" - I'll have to check out! Thanks again, all! |
