I got a late PH-1 by the mail yesterday, it was supposed to be a silver screw but it turned out to be a black screw Serial 075500, paperlabel under battery. When I opened it up I saw a very strange hole for the battery cable, it was oval (15 x 5 mm), the ends of the hole was really rounded off (but the long sides was parallel). I have never seen that before, the usual is a rectangular hole (near the screw, under the battery). This oval hole was placed at the same location but is narrower than the rectangular. Im really sure that its original, the paint was still on the edges of the hole. The usual hole from this period is rectangular and there is also a hole beside the switch, not so on my PH-1. The was just this oval hole in the whole department. Anybody seen this before?

That doesn't sound like anything I've seen. Any possibility you can get a picture of it? Interesting to get confirmed that the PH-1 production didn't stop immediately when the PH-1R was released. There is at least a few months overlap where both pedals were produced. |

Actually this is the same as mine. Never noticed it before.

hmmm I wonder if this means that the bottom plate said "Use a coin.."
I just received a CE-2 - an old one with a long dash and different fonts in "Chorus". This bottom plate also said "Use a coin.." but it has a black screw as well. Serial number is: 124600.
Does anyone know if they changed to black screw before changing the wording on the bottom plate?? Or is it just a coincidence with 2 pedals who either got a different bottom plate or got the silver screw switched with a black?

Just ran the serial number of the CE-2 and the PH-1 through Bossareas excelent serial decoder. Turns out thy were both made in 1981 - one in may the other in october.
So maybe there might be something to the theory that "use a coin.." bottom plates were still used with the first black screws??

| A lot indicates that the black screw was introduced a while before the wording on the bottom plate changed. The long dash changed somewhere around 13xx00-16xx00 too. |

Vim thanks for that clear picture, and indeed, it looks unusual.

My PH-1 is exacly like Vim Fuegos, the same hole. And it says use a coin. What I meant above was that the seller said it would be a silver screw, but i wasnt..... Interesting to know if this hole is on other pedals than PH-1, I believe that. |

I was taking some pictures yesterday when I found two similar pedals. PH-1R, serial number starts with 08 (I'm at work and can't remember the rest) and DS-1 with unreadable serial.
It might have been a short lived feature used around June-July 1981. |
