ANY distortion of overdrive pedal functions as some sort of preamp: They can alter and colour the overal level of the sound.
Anything which can alter the level of the sound can be considered as a "preamp". Apart from the overdrives and distortions one could think of a parametric EQ or a graphic EQ as a preamp as well.
Your choise will depend on what you want from the preamp, as all the different pedals mentions above have their own characteristics in sound.
That is a funny idea eh? How can people can it in their right mind to use a compact pedal to drive a poweramp???
You may be right, I could not bend my mind to read that into the post.
I agree that the PW-2 has a wrong name, wrong advertising tag. It does not really work as a Tubesreamer, but reading the description that comes along with the pedal, this is the kind of idea one would get from this pedal.
The PW-2 would have done better if it was given a name along the lines of Grunge or something similar.
