The band the Who that is..

I never really gotten into the Who until I found out about a project of some of my favourite musicians, Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan who had a Who tribute band with Dream theater drummer Mike Portnoy and Extreme singer Gary Cherone called The amazing journey.

They put out a DVD with a gig at BB Kings in New York, including some kickass bonus footage, and all I can say is wow, I never knew it was that good. The only songs I knew were Baba O'reilly cause Mr. Big played it forever and offcourse My generation but there's a lot of other great stuff in there.

Here's a little example:

from 1968 to 1970 The Who were hands down the best live band on the planet, like an engine or some outta control doomsday device chugging along to bring about our destruction, Moon & Company were the real deal...Live At Leeds...need I say more...and their violent show at Woodstock pretty much set them as the world's first punk band...attitude wise anyway...bet those hippies shit themselves
one of my alltime faves...but I can only stomach from Tommy(1968)to Who's Next(1970)...def. a live band for sure, compaired to their shows their albums always fell a bit short for me...their live prowess is unrivaled by anybody then and now.

I found the Paul Gilbert/Sheehan thing a while back which is weird as I've been a Who fan for decades and a gilbert fan for 5 years+... One of the greatest british bands ever

To me they are one of the greats that defined rock music along with the Beatles, Dylan, Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Led Zep and Zappa (I have probably forgotten a few but you hopefully see what I mean and yes I have left the Stones out deliberately). Personally I think they ran out of steam in various ways by about 72 but from the early singles, the early rock operas and the performance there was some real magic happening, bottled lightning. If you are looking for live stuff seek out the real stuff with Moon on drums though not any of the later releases. On album Who's Next is a great place to start.
