Will some friend, please point me toward someplace pleasant?

I am a newbie and curious. I have read all I can find about pedal order, etc. Lately, I have been experimenting with how the settings of the guitar's tone knobs affect the sound of a pedal's various settings, as well as how the settings of an upstream pedal affects the sound of another downstream pedal.

I was surprised to discover how extremely sensitive the sound of some pedals are to the settings of its neighbors. For example, how at some settings, one effect literally cancels out the signal of another effect so that volume/tone is sharply reduced. How two pedals at certain settings create an unwanted pulsating signal that varies in volume (e.g., the adding of two out of phase signals, but when they are aligned, the volume momentarily jumps to a speaker popping level). More specific examples, there seem to be certain OS-2 and DS-1 settings that do not work with an OC-3 set on Ultra; nor does an "on" DS-1 seem to like being connected to an "on" OS-2 in a chain. I have also played around with how much difference there is between the sound of guitar versus bass through the same effect at different settings. I have read enough to understand that some effects (e.g., maybe an AW-3 set on voice) are combinations of what I think are called "clipping circuits" and that the "clipping point" (my term) of one circuit greatly impacts the "clipping abilities/points" (my term) of any other circuits, such that these kinds of pedals have to be set right on the cusp of specific stable/unstable settings for the desired effect to get generated. Unfortunately, I have not taken the time to document my findings.

I hope all the above made enough sense so that you understand the gist of my question.

So, I was wondering if anyone knows of a resource that has already done something like this. Or is it really that much trial and error. I hope not but it probably is. Sigh, if so.

I would be interested in knowing if anyone has experienced switching between guitars making a difference.

Thanks in advance.

Hi jwdefoor I've flipped through this book at the music store, and it looks pretty good. (If any of my relatives are reading, it would make a fine Christmas gift)
