Listen, if I looked to modern music to be inspired most of the time, I'd give up playing. That said, I find I can learn something from most good performances, regardless of the amt of shred.

Most of the time I look to artists that I may have missed during my younger, more closed minded days.

A great example is Jeff Beck Blow by Blow.

I was a big EC fan and when I read about BBB I was all over the record. (This was well after it came out BTW) I got it, listened to it once and HATED it. I dumped it into a drawer and didn't listen to it for 3 or 4 years.

But when I listened to it again, I was ready for it. My ears were ready for it.

Im not saying that there may or may not be the next EVH (or whoever) out there, but Im guessing that there is already music out there that you have not heard that will inspire you or blow you away.

I think at the time, Tuck Andress Reckless Precision CD taught me more about funk then a lot of JB & Funkadelic records. While one would hardly call Tuck a shredder (Lotsa shredders cover Cole Porter ha ha ha) hes a bad MFer. I wanted to throw my gtr out the window and give up playing.

Maybe look at a different style of music.

I know this one: there was this folk player back in Ottawa - Terry Tufts - used to play at a cafe I worked at once in awhile. Brilliant finger picker - I'd watch him & wouldn't touch a guitar for a week.

I guess my point is how many blues great are there going to be like SRV? Maybe once a generation?

I saw hime 5 times b/f he died and literally no one of his generation (and quite a few before and after him) in the blues touched his talent. D Trucks comes close, but he's really the next gen.

Mayer? Please. He's good no doubt but even he admits he's still not shed his SRV influences. When I hear him all I hear is SRV.

Back to my point.....

There are a ton of AWESOME jazz players out there. Do I really care if they came out today or 25 years ago? IF the point is to be inspired then no. If this is a comment on music today, we have a lot more issues than good gtr players...and I'll stop posting in this topic.

Go listen to Scott Henderson, either his solo blues stuff or Tribal Tech.

If you are a big EC fan and maybe not a Floyd fan, maybe you missed Waters Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking - a great almost Floyd record with some great gtr work by EC.

Lotsa ways to feed your head..

If we're moving outside the world of electric, there are some more recent heroes..

for bass - Tony Levin, Victor Wooten, even Flea
for acoustic - Michael Hedges, my own is Don Ross

For acoustic stuff, I love Andy McKee. He's on YouTube for those unfamiliar.

CHECK OUT ANDY MCKEE IF YOU'VE NEVER SEEN HIM.

It may restore some of your hope in current guitar players.

Great suggestion Nion. I actually came on the board to make the same suggestion then saw your post.

Andy McKee and Don Ross have several videos together.. he also lists Ross and Hedges as primary influences. Check out their stuff if you haven't heard it. Not a lot of BOSS pedal potential, but, hey, nice sounds.

Most people have probably seen this video of acoustic guitar tapping. If you look closely at 1:53 Erik useing a Boss pedal.

Man I haven't been inspired by a "guitar hero" in a long time. The rock dinosaurs died along time ago for me. I gave up on the radio at least ten years ago. I mean I don't listen to it at all(so boring and predictable). Finding new music for me, much less a "guitar hero" is almost painful. I know this doesn't help at all, but I really understand where you are coming from.
