Does anyone here use anything like the Devi Bit/Mangler or Mellowtone Wolf Computer?

Just wondered what your thoughts where on them, and -since this is a Boss forum afterall- do you think they'll ever 'go digital' ala delay circuits? And will Boss ever do the Boss Bit?

do noise pedals like the MXR Blue box or DOD Buzz Box qualify as bit/glitch fuzz pedals?

well most newer Boss pedals are already digital - for example all COSM stuff is digital (so the newest FUZZ is as well)

oh and if you want simple bit reduction I guess the early delay's are 12bit (might be wrong on that front)

but basically anything lower than 16bit is noticeable

i have a Wolf Computer and it is pure gold...can do subtle overdrive to insane fuzz/noise...i'm particularly keen on the sag control cause it gets that sputtering/dying battery thing to a whole different dimension and the controls are really interactive so like a slight adjustment from one of the knobs can bring very different sounds...i doubt i'll ever get bored with it...and it has lots of gain on tap so when it's mixed with other noise/dist/fuzz boxes in my chain it's just magical...

point being...i like it, a lot...

and i would like a Legend of Fuzz but i'd rather have a dedicated bit reducer and those are just too hard to come by...unless you know of any?...

as you might know, the Buzz Box was designed by DOD to 'model' Melvins guitarist Buzz Osbourne's MXR Blue Box-powered tone, basically by using a Grunge gain circuit to drive a Blue Box-esque glitchy suboctave circuit. not surprisingly, they did not sell well (the sales tagline was "it's not broken, it's supposed to sound like that"), and are now rather rare (and ludicrously expensive now... $250+ on evilBay).

mine was bought used about a year ago, and using it must be kind of like starting up that hadron collider in Europe.... you start with the guitar's volume all the way down, and slowly turn it up to minimize the risk of, say, hitting the low E string and blowing a speaker (or causing a black hole that swallows the earth).

like the Blue Box, the sub-octave note produced seems to randomly oscillate (sp.?) between 1 or 2 octaves down. unlike the Blue Box, the addition of the DOD Grunge fuzz circuit makes the overall effect much nastier (and less controllable, IMHO). you can approximate King Buzzo's sound, and you can also approximate the sound of an old Atari 2600 console being pummeled by a rabid monkey with a vintage fuzz face (try playing harmonics).

overall, it is not the most versatile effect, but as someone who likes nasty and weird distortion pedals as much as "traditional" dirt boxes, I do recommend it (if you can find it for a decent price).

yeah i really doubt i'd find one at a price worth picking it up but i was just curious...from what you say though...sounds lovely...i have a blue box and i actually can't get over the volume cut in it so it's off the board currently...any other cheaper DOD noise boxes you'd recommend?...

you might try buying a DOD Grunge (or FX70x Metal X -- very similar circuit, with three 4558-type op amps) to drive your Blue Box... I have done this with my reissue Blue Box, and it's not as over the top, but is much more controllable than the Buzz Box alone. plus Grunge pedals were so common, they can usually be found for less than $20....

DOD's other 'noise' pedals (Meat Box, Gonkulator) are also getting more expensive; beyond that, the Classic Fuzz and Flashback Fuzz can be delightfully nasty/thick at the 'right' settings....

good luck!

eah the gonkulator is out of the question due to it's way huge price but i've seen some Meat Boxes go for a reasonable bit...and yeah i've tried drive the blue box with various boost/overdrive pedals and it just wasn't working for me...which is a shame cause i like the little blue casing...haha...

The Gonkulator is another classic example of " The Emperor having no
clothes. " An E H Frequency Analyzer and any strong fuzz will run circles around a Gonkulator. I get wonderfully sick sounds with
my HM-2 and Freq. Analyzer. Run through a PS-2 or PS-3 this set up is an aural atrocity to be envied. In a feedback loop sick, just sick.

I have a Devi Ever Disaster Fuzz.

I use a Boss OD-1 in front of it (needn't be switched on) to tame it to my liking. Without a buffered pedal in front it's too over the top for me, just a noisemaker with a constant drone, but with the Boss in place it can be set so there is no noise unless you play. I never quite worked out if the constant drone was a feature (I think it is) or a defect (I'd hoped the switch might turn it off), but it does produce a very heavy distortion which I like.

The pedal has Volume and Control pots, plus a switch. I believe the switch toggles the octave/glitch function, though I still don't understand the controls really, the Control pot doesn't seem to do much before the 3 o' clock setting. The octave function is noticeable when playing single notes, it produces 3 or 4 descending notes after the played note.

I use an adaptor as the battery well is too small for all the batteries I have
An unusual pedal, more extreme than I would normally like but it seems to get me playing things I normally wouldn't so I like it for that reason.
