Hey guys,
I have an Ibanez RG321mh that I love. I love everything about it, except the finish. It seems to be stained instead of painted, which makes it just look really dull etc, so I want to refinish it with jet black, and maybe our bands logo on. Anyone got any ideas of somewhere in UK to get this done cheaply, or a really easy way for me to do it myself? Its only the body that needs doing, do I literally just follow a refinishing site and treat it like its bare wood or do I have to remove the stain somehow?
Its not a vintage instrument or anything like that, I think it might even still be in production and I'm not too bothered about the resale value. Only need two loyal fans of the band that want it and its worth more already ;) but I probably wont sell it any time soon anyway. |

Oh, please don't do that!
It's a mahogany body with lots of grains, right? I know that model and I liked it. ESPECIALLY the finish! Please think about your plan to repaint it a few weeks more. I wouldn't do it! It makes the guitar so special in my eyes! |

| Its that model but stained black, but you cant even see the grain from more than about 2 feet away. its on the wall on the other side of my room next to my ICX220 which is gloss black, it just looks like a failed dark grey from here. The one in that link does look nice though, might have to hunt that down! |

Or sand it down to the wood & oil it instead of painting. Smells nice & looks great! |

Or play it like hell and wait for the stained finish to come off by itself in places. It will look vintage, ha. No, seriously, a friend has this guitar for a few years now and the finish is worn to the wood and comes off quite easily and it doesn't look too good. I'm here with Witloofboer. Oiling would look much better than any other homemade finish.
Pretty good guitar for the money though. |

Is it like this?
Looks like a guess-a-rama if I can say that. |

| I own a RG470 and it's like a sparkle finish, somewhat dark grey, somewhat dark green. I think it's beautiful and if you don't mind having to tune it after every other song then it's a good guitar. |

Yes that was exactly it. except mine has an EMG81 in the bridge, coz although I like Infinity pickups the EMGs are just incredible. If you want an Ibanez with a good finish though check out either that brick one (dunno what its called) or the Xiphos with the chameleon finish. Nothing cooler than a guitar that changes colour...
Anyway it wouldn't be a cheap home finish I'd get it done professionally. I might just have some kind of coating on it, so you can still see the grain but its glossy, like on most sunburst strats you can see the grain through the amber parts |
