i'm gonna get blasted for this but i'm diggin' the XT2 at the mo.

play with the tone controls and you can get it sounding really good. i'm getting some overdriven spectrum esque parked wah type drive out of it.

not the most versatile od/dist out there by far. but i'm loving the little red monster

I haven't tried all that many of the Boss dirt pedals but the HM-3 can cover a huge range of gain, from indie overdrive to insane metal distortion. It responds well to the guitar volume and the 2-band eq allows a lot of flexibility but a third mids control would've been perfect, as it's sometimes a bit more scooped in the mids than I'd like. This constant scoop kind of eliminates it though - you'd need to re-EQ after the fact or maybe run an SD-1 or something to get a bluesy sound out of it.

I haven't tried 'em all of course...

But for me (the ones I own) I would have to say the MT-2. Not the best for each style obviously but I think I can get fairly decent tones for all styles out of it (i.e. from mild OD to crunch to bluesy OD to distortion to full on metal - I really like the parametric EQ control to help with these).

Welcome to the department of redundancy department.

Back on topic... I said I love the SD-2 for an all in one, but to be honest my "go to" pedal is my modified DS-1. But, it does have a switch to toggle between 2 types of clipping.

some guys here mentioned the MEga Distortion MD-2 pedal... is it good? I thought it was a "one sound only" pedal...

The MD-2 is my secret weapon. a lot of people hate it because its apparantly for nu metal, but that is just bogus. i use it after my SD-1. on the MD-2 i use gain 1 set pretty high and use gain 2 set at 0. with my neck humbucker and my EH-2 after it i get the creamiest sounding tone ever. this combo actually replaced my SD-1/BD-2 combo.

I'll have to try that out sometime.
I just got my MD-2, and it sounded nothing like what it did when i tried it in the store (different pedal though). When i tried it there, it was the fattest sound ive ever heard. Here it sounds like an MT-2 without the metal tone to it.
I was dissapointed, and think one of the circuits might be broken or something.

How's the OD-2 work in the role of subtle first gain stage in a cascading line like you're using the SD-1? I think the HM-3 would benefit from something that will inject some mids back into the signal, and MIJ OD-2s sell for cheaper than SD-1s on the local ebay.

i find the SD-1 to be the best OD boost since it is so mellow. ive tried them ALL and SD-1 seemed to work best.
as for the HM-3 being driven, ive never tried. i like to combine 2 "lighter" pedals. i find this gives me the sound im looking for.

maybe the circuits aren't broken and you were just using a different guitar/amp combo in the store? Best idea when trying out pedals in a store is to take your own guiitar in.
Stick an equalizer after it and scoop the mids, boost the rest and this will be a pedal with some real gutsy low end grunt to it.

I'd choose the MT-2 as my 1 distortion pedal to use, but thats closely followed by the MD-2.

A favourite pedal of mine that is very versatile on both cleaner settings, aswell as more distorted ones is the DS-1 Analog Man mod.

I´ve been using this one for a long time now, even though I sometimes drag out one of my DS-1 MIJ pedals for a stomp.
