the metal screw ds1's ( and others...ce2 etc.. ) have ' green drop caps'..(theres 8 of em... interstage??) and the later pedals with the same chip dont.
its these caps which make the earlier pedals sound less compressed, more open, and more ' real '.
ive posted before on this before from memory and im even more convinced now than i was then as i have procured more older ss pedals and done more comparisons.
Interestingly i recently compared two 8 pin od1's and couldnt work out why one sounded ' better ' than the other. the pedals were identical in age and components.
i mean i really was confused. I can hear the differences in these pedals quite easily.
It turns out the pots ( level- overdrive ) on the one that sounded ' worse ' were 15 percent lower value ( defective? ).
i actually went to the trouble of swapping everything over except the pots and bingo...the ' worse ' one sounded...' better '.
I have a MIT I picked up in Ballarat for a flat $50au. Tt sounds fabulous, & it's like no other DS-1 that I have, it's become my go to pedal, fro when I need that distortion sound.
I've loaned it out a few times to other astute players, & yes it's always a bit of tug or war to get it back.
I do have a cherished SS DS-1 as well. but she's in retirement now.
I know it has been brought up before, but isn't there a MIT version of the DS-1 that is supposed to sound really harsh? I think it is from the early 90's if memory is correct.
