I just finished building a cab to go with my Vox AD50VT and have the jack socket wired in series so it is running at 16 ohms. The amp is rated at 8 ohms but is happy running 16Ohms.
The cab is made of 15mm MDF and is not too heavy. I have a the original Celestion 70-80 I took out of the combo in the cab. It is covered in thin black felt which is easy to work with and I picked up some black cloth that had an open weave for the grill cloth. The stripe and logo are sray painted silver. The sound with both speakers running is more spacious sounding.

Hi One-Way

First of all, it's nice to see you back.

And the extension cabinet once again, looks up to your professional standard.
Even the sprayed on Logo & baffle cloth stripe.
It's like a mini stack.

I see you have your handmade natural finish Strat. next to it.

What is that BehringClone pedal on the top of the amp.
Looks a bit like the graphic EQ, or the Ultra Chorus?

How long did it take you to complete?
Did you use white woodwork glue, or contact cement, to stick the black carpet to the MDF case?

One more question One-Way:
Is that a beam blocker, like Weber/kendrick amps, & a few other people now sell,
that I can see behind the grill of your Vox AD50VT Combo?

Regards Dr. Bob

Nice cab, plus you can't go wrong with Celestions.

Very nice work. but to let you know mdf is not a great choice for word for a cab.I would make it out of real wood can een the wood of the cabinet has tonal properties on the sound of the cab

Personally i don't like MDF either(20 years in construction that and chipboard is in IMHO = )...i would use 18mm ply or i have some pitch pine T&G floorbords i had thought of using to make a couple of cabs, glue them together and the bracing as well should keep them tight....but again i think the finish you got is excellent and as Dirk said you can't really go wrong with a celestion speaker.....

i'm going to try and find the time to do this thing with the 1x12 cabs..i'll post some pics hopefully over the next few weeks....

I built it from MDF as it was the only suitable thing I could find at the time and cheap. I guess solid pine would be the best choice as it quite light in comparison and resonates at high volumes. As`Im not running it at high volume levels I dont think the construction wood would make any difference somehow.
All joints were screwed and glued with yellow aliphatic wood glue.
I used a 250ml tin of Selleys contact cement to glue on the Felt covering. An old paint brush is great for applying the glue. Yes the spray on glue is quicker but costs a lot more for the same result.
I like to use felt as it is easy to apply, resists knocks and hides flaws easy than vinyls do. I found it a breeze to cover a square box after covering the custom fitted guitar cases Ive made which is very time consuming.
Ive since made up description labels for the jack sockets on my amp and cab which looks more professional and wont be a mystery for anyone who may own them in future.
I have my Behringer EQ pedal thru the FX loop to fine tune the sound and the beam blockers are my own design which help take away the harsh treble from the centre of the speaker. It consists of a cardboard cone glued to a piece of plywood. The angle of the cone is 90 degrees similar to the speaker cone angle.

I used it today at church when playing with the worship band and it is noticeable that I have to have the volume cranked more with it running at 16 ohms to be at the same level as the internal speaker at 8 ohms.

yeah, the higher the impedance the more the amp has to work to drive the speaker.

that beam blockers an idea! maybe try mounting the speaker on the outside of the cab or adding some wadding in the cab itself.

not to hijack your thread but here is a pic of my bass cab i made and my bass when i first got it.

Nice cab and Bass. I see it is ported. Are those the tuneable ports that can be shortened or lengthened?
What advantages does mounting the speaker from the front of the cab have over rear mounting it apart from being able to have a fixed back panel?

yes, they are tuneable ports. it is really two cabs in one, there is a dividing shelf inside the cab.

front mounting a speaker (even better in a recess*) creates less diffraction in loudspeakers, probably not as important in guitar cabs etc, but maybe worth a try.
