My neighbour was doing a cleanup at some site, and found a Shin-ei Fuzz wah 8-TR, the ones with the switch and knobs on the side, a little Shin-ei logo on the foot switches.
Had to resolder the battery clip, other than that, excellent condition
Pretty cool fuzz, different than my Vox fuzz-wah
Does anyone know anything about these pedals, or about Shin-ei?
Seem to remember Dr. Bob helping someone repair one on this site.

Hi Christo & Guys

Wow what a nice score.
Take good care of her, she's worth a small fortune, & I do mean a small fortune.

Yes I rebuilt one for ShakeTheDevil. (Aussie member from Brisbane - Laurie's old stomping grounds)
He's really lucky I'm an honest person, else he would have never seen it again.

He uses it almost constantly, his was just the Wah version, no Fuzz.
He gigged it in front of a massive stadium crowd, after I returned it.
He gets many inquires about it, from fellow muso's wanting to know what (WTF) he was using.

The pot & gear assembly are not standard Crybaby specs.
The pinion gear on the pot has a different number of teeth, same with the rack (straight) gear.

Any specific questions, other than about the company?

I do know they OEM'ed their designs for a lot of other companies, & I do mean a lot.
Check out Bart's effects database site, the old DiscFreqFX site.
He has a truck load of cross references for the other brands.

If you look on the base-plate, you should see an ink stamped circle,
with some numbers in it, the larger one, is the date, eg. 74 would be 1974.
They are old, the 10uf-20uf caps will definitely need replacing, the ones on Shake's were very high ESR, because of their age.

The schematic on the Wah only version was incorrect,
I can't remember specifics, but I did take a lot of pics, mainly for my own personal reference.

Some pictures of your new baby would be greatly appreciated.
You're welcome to PM me, or post any other questions here.

Man! I'm very happy for you, but also very envious.

They sound freaking awesome when running properly.
Oh yeah - I did a heap of tests when I had to replace the pot.

Regards Dr. Bob

PS - Please leave it to me in your "Last Will And Testament"

Alas I'm still too dumb to be able post pics in this forum...
Sent the pics to Dr. Bob hoping he can post them.

There was no date stamp on the bottom plate so I have know idea the year, no stamp on the pots either. Altho if I had the manufacturers specs, could figure out the date codes of the C536 transistors d/c F0H.

The gear has a ratio of 15:1, Meastro wahs have 16 and Hot Pots II from modern Crybabys have 14.

The fuzz/volume pots are by Cosmos 50KB, standard 100KG pot for the wah. Tone switch seems to be an off/on, or soft/hard
The DPDT switches are by KoGYo, and man are they smooth to the touch when pushing it, plus they have the little Shin-ei logo. Seen others with Companion across it.
The input and output jacks for opposite from todays effects, the guitar goes in the left jack, the amp runs out the right side, guess the guitar cord kept getting in the way...
As with all vintage effects, it only runs on a 9v, no AC jack

The fuzz has six transistors to it. Legend has it Shin-ei hired Univox as well as others to make their pedal, and it took on many shapes and names including the SuperFuzz and the Roland Bee-Baa
Don't know what fuzz is in there, but I do know its some serious wall o' fuzz.

Those things are killer - and definitely worth good money. the fuzz crowd can get a little nuts sometimes.

I'd love to see pics (of course) and hear a sound sample.

i have one!! the SHin-Ei Companion Fuzz Wah. although mine is the version with the knobs and the "hard/soft" switch both on the front of the pedal (not the side.) ive actually never seen another one like it.
i LOVE the fuzz on it. its dirty man. soft is just like a wall of fuzz and hard with wah engaged sounds like im stepping on a bug. i have not been able to reproduce its tone on all the Boss/Digitech single/multis ive ever played. truly a unique pedal. only thing is that its gotta be at least 30 years old and sometimes it doesnt switch between clean/fuzz and straight/wah every time.

Hi StratoSphere

Congrats on being fortunate enough to own one of these.
The topology of the Fuzz section is quite interesting, & unlike any other fuzz I have looked at.
I'm not surprised that it sounds very different, to what is commonly considered a Fuzz circuit.

As for you intermittent switch,
there is just enough mechanical slop/play on the top side shaft/actuator of the switch to allow you to slowly dribble some contact cleaner,
down the side of the shaft, not from the top button.
Do this a few time, tap out the residue & years of accumulated diry & grime, until the fluid is the same clour as the fresh contact cleaner.
You many have to do this several times, tap it out over some clean white tissues, to see what's coming out of switch.

Good luck

You know I'm going to ask you for some internal & external pics of your one?

Regards Dr. Bob

That would be great to compare them, thinking the board is the same but the switches are different places as you said.
From what I was told, this pedal was sitting in a pile for the longest time, being unused so long, the nine 10uf caps will be all dried out and need replacing. I'll have some time over the holidays to swap them out and take pics of the solder side.
