What are some amp settings/pedals/tunings/etc. my guitarist could use to have a Math-rock? I'm looking for a more 'poppy' sound but still some 'edge'. Stuff like Tubelord, This Town Needs Guns, Minus the Bear, Foals. Maps & Atlases and junk.
P.S. I'm a drummer, I don't know much about guitar and my guitarist is also somewhat of a beginner, but any help would be appreciated. :) |

I haven't heard of it either, nor any of those bands.
If you talk about a poppy sound, that could even be anything. My guess would just be clean and distortion and a bunch of staple effects like chorus and delay. |

I love Math Rock. Math Rock is known for it's complex uses of strange counts, timings and rhythms.
Video of one of my favorite Math Rock bands: Hella
...and another favorite Math Rock band: 65daysofstatic |

Alright, thanks guys...
I gave the list of bands so that if you didn't know the genre, you could look and up and see what it sounds like. |

Listening to the links and to the what the guitar players are using a distortion or overdrive should be enough..or if you haven't got one just crank the amp until it starts to breakup..the guitar playing seems more about the phrasing with the drums rather than using effects...... |

Yeah, distortion is what your guitar player needs and I guess everybody need to count really good. I liked 65daysofstatic. Hella? Not so much tbh...
Man, I used to study music with a guy who was into what I now learn is called Math Rock; back then in '94 he simply called it punk. He had a trio and they would play things in 11, 13 or 15 beats per measure and while the rest of us were far better musicians technically than those guys, our jaws hit the floor first time we heard them rock on in full unison.
Impressive, hell yes, but interesting? Not to me, but I recognize where it's coming from. I used to listen to all those speed demons dreaming myself of being fast, fast, fast.
Now, I'm just an old fart |

Yeah Hella is definitely an acquired taste. They aren't for everyone.
And I agree with Dirk JaredxSmith, staple effects. |
