The boxes have changed a bit over the years. The most notable difference is that the end of the box used to be white and the sides used to be coloured. Today's boxes have coloured ends and white sides. This change occurred around 1988/1989. My July-88 LM-2 has a white end box while my Jan-89 DSD-3 has a coloured end box (both MIJ)but I don't know if all boxes were changed at the same time.
There's also minor changes like Roland Japan/Roland Taiwan. I've got two CE-3 boxes (both white ends) where this is the only difference between them.
The DD-3 box used to be snow white but is today a light yellow colour. Not sure when this change took place but most likely it was well after the production moved to Taiwan. There is of course also changes between Octaver/Octave boxes, Super Distortion/Super Feedbacker etc.
There might be more changes that I haven't thought about too. Anyone discovered others?

Bossarea, I have a couple of boxes that do not seem to match that year of transition. Here's a picture of my 1983 PH-1r, 1984 PH-2, 1984 DM-3 and DD-5 (don't know the year, but i guess post-1995)

| The DD-5 is a special case as the box is white (yellowish) but the PH-2 and DM-3 boxes seem to ruin my theory. Looks like it may have happened at different times for the different pedals. |

Here is the box of my last acquisition. The box has half-circle holes at the bottom. I don't know if this is original, but it seems it could be, as it is really well done.

Do anyone allready saw something like that ? |

The box to my SS-version DS-1 also have the halfcircles, and the box itself is from quite hard and stiff material. I am positive this is an original design. I wonder if this might be the earliest box design...?
The box for my 1980 TW-1 does not have these halfcircles, and the paper the box it is made of is softer. |

I checked ebay for some photos and my own collection and I think there are 6 different types.
1: the oldest type with the halfcircles cut out. 2: made in japan colored sides, "Roland japan" written on it, without barcode. 3: made in japan colored sides, "made in japan" written on it , without barcode. 4: made in japan colored sides, "made in japan" written on it, with barcode. 5: made in taiwan, colored sides, nothing written on it, with barcode. 6: made in taiwan white sides.
So I think you can't just buy any box to complete your pedal, it has to match the date. |
