i'm needing to free up more money, so it looks like i'm going to unload my marshall silver jubilee 2558 2x12 combo amp...

took me 2 years to track it down but it's now worth double what it was when i bought it. it needs a recap and possibly a retube, which i'm not in a position to pay for right now.

it books in around $2000 but i'm fairly certain it'll be worth $4000 in 10 years. i paid $1100.

i'm trying to decide if i should keep it or take a good trade + cash offer but i would be taking in something that would be worth less 10 years from now.

of the offers i've gotten so far i can probably get around $1300 + a mesa boogie f-100 2x12 combo. the mesa is worth around $800 and in 10 years will probably be worth $1000. the $1300 would help me out big time right now.

tough call... i don't care much for the sound of the jubilee until i gets maintenance so it will probably just sit there until my finances clear up.

some other options i was debating were something like a peavey JSX + cash or even some more bargain oriented tube amps (sovtek, laney, etc.)

any opinions?

Here's a question - is it only about the appreciating value of the amp? If your focus holding on to it is simply to make some $ selling it in the future (no emotional attachment - and that seemed to be the thread in your post?), then let it go for the best deal you can get to raise the cash you need now. You will figure out some other way of making the $2000 appreciation you would have had if you kept it for the next 10 years.

If, on the other hand, you really like it as an amp (you will be able to afford the maintenance at some point)... don't do it mate! Sell the cat, mortgage the neighbour's car... anything to get the cash. I'd say you'd definitely regret it sometime in the future it if you let go.

I miss the 2 Jubilee heads I had. Keeping it = no regrets.

i have 2-3 instruments that have emotional attachment.

aside from that i've always had to sell gear to get new gear and that process has pretty much kept me from every really bonding with anything.

i'm also a tone chaser and that ensured i swapped gear often.

i rarely turn profit on gear since i'm a gift giver... and often have given away stuff to friends who needed it more or would use it/appreciate it more. given away 7 guitars, a bass, and 3 amps this way as well as a slew of effects pedals/processors. if it's too nice to give away i'll sell it for a bargain price to a friend wanting it.

only after i've decided not to give it away or sell it cheaply to a friend do i ever really turn gear loose on the open market. half the time i just trade it in at one of a few shops that give me pretty good trade in value (50-70% or they'll cut a sweet deal on what i'm trading towards, etc.).

the jubilee was meant to be my end all be all of amps. i dug on it big time when i first got it and still aspired to play in bands. since then i just haven't used it much, and even less when it started getting a lil tinny in the highs. since i rarely play at high volumes anymore, i can get a decent clean tone with any of my tube amps, making the jubilee much less necessary than it was before.

the jubilee is the only amp i've ever owned that wasn't a bargain buy (or at the very low end of it's "book" value). my gigging amps were a fender stage 112se (x-mas present), a crate vintage style stack, a carvin/hughes & kettner rack half stack... all of which are forgettable. in my more serious years, my gigging amps were a lot of value buys. '68 twin reverb for $525, '73 fender bassman 10 for $329, jcm900 4102 for $699 (back when they were usually like $1100 used), 5150 combo for $380, '82 concert lead $269, fender super 112 for $229, marshall jtm60 combo for $379 NOS, and a slew of others.

the most i've ever spent on an electric guitar was $1249 for a brand new wine red les paul standard w/ hsc. the most i've ever spent on an amp was $1060 for my silver jubilee.

the only regrets i ever have with instruments are:
1. when i unload a piece of gear for less than i paid for it
2. when i unload a piece of gear that ends up increasing significantly in value.
3. when i pass on a piece of gear that ends up increasing significantly in value.
4. buying something that has the value drop through the floor.

so... the potential for my jubilee is #2. honestly, i would probably rather have like a JSX combo in its place right now anyways, or a jcm800 channel switcher and some extra cash.

if i had $1100 again (minus my jubilee) and could choose between buying another jubilee combo and other instruments/amps, i'd definitely go for something different.

yes and no...

i'm out of my mind right now, which i know :)

i seek guidance from a voice of reason that has nothing to do with emotional attachment.

seeking something along the lines of "dude, that thing will be worth a ton in a few years, hang onto it a bit longer" or "sell it IF you can get $X for it."

etc.

I don't know if this helps any but joe bonamassa swears his jubilee head is the best marshall model they ever made...... boogies are great amps but is it the sound you want...?? how much is a cap job and a re-tube if you do it yourself...??my musicman combo needs a re cap that i'm going to have a go at myself...sell something else that you don't need and keep the marshall,i came close to selling stuff when in the same boat but a little voice kept saying i would regret it in years to come so i never did ...i just chased up some 'cash in the hand' work to keep me ticking over,i admire you philosophy of looking after you friends with stuff but maybe you should start thinking about yourself a little more these days and if it means something going into the small ad's for an extra few bucks.... i can see that you like to see stuff going to a good home and being used, and i feel the same way myself when i comes to music gear bro'....but if it means your back is to the wall and have to start selling something that you love..........

thanks Franz and everyone else...

that's the kind of input i was looking for.

imo, they are the best marshall amps ever made.

in the process of rehabbing my hand i'm playing stuff that i've never played before on guitars in a style that i've never played before.

that is, learning van halen, iron maiden, old ozzy, with some old fugazi and jane's addiction thrown in for good measure, etc. in order to build my speed and strength back up. all this on a few bargain mij shred guitars. everything lately has been based upon functionality and nothing based upon tone. been using my jcm900 almost exclusively lately as well as the 5 watt peavey valve king i have at my gf's.

recap/retubing here runs around $250 + parts. i can get a used laney pro tube or peavey prowler for like $300... which don't have the tone but have the functionality and would be sufficient for me for now.

i think i've come to the conclusion that i'm going to hang onto it unless i get a really sweet offer (e.g. $2k cash). the reason i considered the mesa is because it's at a local shop whose owner wants my jubilee but doesn't want to go above $1650 or so. they have it at $700 meaning they probably gave $350 trade or like $280 cash on the mesa f100, and i figured he would be willing to give $1650 in his cost, which would be $1300 + $350.

i'm so much less picky about my sound now than i used to be.

i need to learn to be stiffer w/ my friends :P just sold my buddy an MIJ 1994 jackson JSX94 concept guitar for $175 w/ bag. prolly worth more like $400 but i got it for $125 so i figured i'd spread the savings around a lil (sold him my 5150 for $430 before).

This is how I deal with this kind of situation.

1st can I make some money out of the deal,
2nd is the item I'm going to sell hard to find, if so I won't sell, if it's not hard to find sell it and if you regret selling it you can always on some point buy another one when you're in a better financial position.

Good luck
