I've just grabbed a 1997 DD-3 (non-SMD, pink Taiwan) and when I opened it up just now to fix a loose baseplate, there was no plastic protector sheet over the PCB.
First, is this normal?
Second, some of those solder points, particulary on the DC inlet, look very close to the surface of the baseplate. Is there a danger they might short out without a protector?
Luckily, I have a spare protector as my SD-1 has two (!). Would it be possible to do harm by adding one, if it's not meant to be there? (I'm presuming not, but still best to ask).

| there should be a protector, if you don't have spare you could also just use a piece of paper or thin cardbord. |

| I've never seen a Boss pedal without the insulating sheet. I suspect someone opened it up, lost the protector sheet and screwed it back together again without noticing it was gone. Even if the back plate was plastic covered it wouldn't hurt putting a sheet in there for double protection. |

It should be there on all pedals. I had an MT-2 come without it - it had been lost or eaten or something. I bought a couple from Roland.
Does your DD-3 have the square chip on the solder-side of the board? If so, you will need a square cut-out in the plastic to allow the top of the chip to rest directly on the baseplate (for cooling).

It does indeed have the square chip soldered to the underside of the PCB - and there are visible little scuff-marks where it has been in contact with the plate. I did wonder if that was normal.
I'll dig out my spare sheet in the morning and get to work. |
