hi all....i've been on the lookout for a turntable for ages now to play all my old vinyl with no sucess..all i could find in town was dj stuff or real cheapo garbage that was in the back of the hi fi stores for years and were looking for outragous money for...!!...anyway to cut to the chase,i was parked on a small sidestreet the other day and there was a house being renovated and one of the builders walked out the door with a pioneer turntable and a twin tapedeck to put in a skip....a quick conversation ensued(he was latvian with very bad english..)and franzoni returned to the boot of the car as the proud owner of said items..got them home, all the turntable needed was a new needle...relayed the story to my mates in the pub the other night and ...hey presto...one of them came up trumps with a pioneer power amp and some speakers he had lying in his mothers house for years...i already had a pioneer cd player in the house so within a week one of my childhood ambitions is realized...to have my own stack system of separates...plus the old systems look cool in the dark.......the house is now rockin' to the sound of all my old john mclaughlin/larry coryell albums.........

Q....am i being eco friendly by reusing all this old stuff 'cause the is still a few vinyl shops in town with lots of secondhand records i'm gonna trawl through on saturday mornings from now on.............

Hi franzoni

In Homer Simpson's best trembling voice

V-i-n-y-l ................. ohhhhhh

I have been collecting heaps of old gear, I recently acquired a Sansui all valve amp & tuner, the tuner even has FM but it's so old it's FM-MONO.

I have to get a couple of new neoprene belts for my Technics belt drive turntables.. with speed control.

And yes Franzoni, you are right about looking cool in a dark room & light up. & you saved someones once pride and joys from ending up in land fill..

I hope you went back to that Latvian man & bought him a few cold stubbies, if you left him your name, he would probably call you every time he had some retro gear to swap for cold beer.

Look at the recovery centre at the local tip, they seem to get TONS of Vinyl thrown out, & at local OpShops & Red+Cross stores.
I bought a set of Phase Linear book shelf speakers for $2au each at the recovery centre, & a dBX 117 stereo compressor of a whole Tenner.

The Phase Linear's are to die for.
I also bought a Marantz Gold gyro touch stereo tuner $8au
and a Pioneer all FET power amp for another tenner.
The Black Marantz dual cassette deck was another tenner, it was new in box - never used with manuals....

I sometimes take that folks down there some coldies & for the ladies a fresh cream sponge.

I even got my MIDI controller keyboard over there.

Sorry if I sound like I'm boasting, but I guess I really am...

Still I really hope your girls family & wife appreciate real audio, not that MP3 compressed stuff my kids listen to & call HIFI

How big are the woofers in the pioneer boxes?
You'll have to find some Direct To Disc records now.

Regards Dr. Bob

hey Franzoni. i recently did the same thing. although in Canada, a deccent turntable is still easy to find and cheap. i picked up a Technics and a Pioneer table for 20 bucks. i find for all that old stereo gear you just have to ask around. someones dad always has them for sale for cheap. not to mention quality tape decks and recievers

I think I already posted a while back that in my teens I would go to the local jumble sale on Saturdays and pick up a record player, which I'd then convert into a guitar amp. Great sound, short lifespan
Sometimes I check them out on Ebay and am amazed by the prices some of these go for nowadays (though they're probably top-end models, Dansettes and so on).

My last bit of vintage kit was an old 70's Sanyo (I think) music centre, huge aluminium knobs and integrated 8-track cassette. I eventually gave it back to the charity shop I found it in because it was too big to move to my new place. It was the sheer over-engineering of these things that were their charm I think.

I have converted all my music to wma/mp3 so most of my stereo is sadly not in use anymore. I've kept my Tandberg 3012 amp and KEF 104/5 speakers but that's it.

My Rega record player couldn't keep even speed anymore so it's collecting dust, my Nakamichi tape deck was given to a mate and my Tandberg FM tuner found the shelf after a switch broke.

It's sad not to have a vinyl player anymore. I got quite a few albums that can't be found on CD anywhere.

When my grandparents referred to the record player as the gramophone we used to get quite a chuckle out of that. Now if I say "I'd like to buy that record",my son will correct me and laugh and say "Don't you mean CD?". I guess the times they are a changin.

Due my age I own many 33 & 45 rpm, one day (around 6 or 7 years ago) I was scannering some label for one of my site (Lucio Battisti or Kiss I don't remember) and the nephew of my wife (now 13 y.o. the nephew, not my wife! ) asked what is this big, black disk on my hands, so I replied that it was a music disk and he: "A music disk? What kind of big computer needs to hear it?".

Strange to say but he never seen a vinyl before in his life! And so many kids today!

It's saddens me to say this but the only tape player I have in the house is my old Sony Walkman! It's either CDs or MP3s now a days.

One thing I do like is that it takes more space to have some of these components. I love my stereo gear but I find I just keep running short of space. Oh well, there's always the next house!

As Im really conservative I still plays a lot of vinyl records, and buy them cheap on the used market. I love the sound, even the all to familiar cracklings, much more than the sterile sounding Cds. I have a huge collection of LPs, 5-6000 I think, mostly blues/blues-rock and progressive & psychedelic rock.
I highly recommend everybody to buy a decent turntable, you can get very good music for nearly nothing at the used market. And the sleeves are readable too, much more than the tiny CD covers.

My daughter is so used to vinyl that she wants all the latest hits for kids on LP. Not CD. And, guess what, it very hard to find newly released music on LP but to find the shit kids like is impossible.
And a word of wisdom:
Real men dont use remote controls!

NOt a surprise to see that there are so many vinyl lovers on this website, it fits well with the collecting nature of the pedals and other gear. Great great great!!!

YEp I still listen to vinyl, have more that acctually CD's.

Bob stories about the recycle places is similar to mine, I found a few good things there, among them a cazio full size keyboard.

Cazios are great for putting some fun ideas on your recordings, but that is another story.

Most well-known bands bring out their new music on download and vinyl, so there is a message.

Never really understood this strange desire to swap all your vinyls for CD's.

I tend to buy new music on cd, but then I do not buy much, listen a lot to the radio, and the stuff I really enjoy is usually music from very unknow artists, but again, that is stuff for another discussion.

I guess when it comes to it, a lot of people in the audio buz will agree that vinyls do sound better. But what if they didn't, the sleeves are still great.

Any thoughts on bands just bringing out their music for download?
Collecting ablums something of the past???

Sorry to hear that Bossarea has no longer a good working record player, I think you should get one, and in England it is really not that hard to find them! but then you may feel they may take up too much space in the house.

Space??? oh well that is another topic on its own eh??!!!

ya i think downloadable albums are the way of the future, but there will always be CDs. its just that you get something physical for your money. with inserts and lyric sheets, know what i mean.
