Ive had a nice Ash Tele body that is the same piece of wood I built my Strat out of. The body has been sitting around semi finished for the time when I decided I would actually put it together. I decided I needed a bass guitar so I can lay down a bass line on my recordings to go with the multiple guitar tracks I have. The body will be contoured like a Strat with a 34" scale length- 12" radius Purple heart fingerboard which Ive machined but need to sand the radius, and a slightly reduced in size P bass type headstock. I am making the neck out of some unknown fine grained wood similar to Maple that I got from the Wood work shop at the school I teach at. I bought a used Fender P bass pickup on Trademe our version of E Bay. I have routed the cavities for the pickups which I moved slightly forward of the standard P bass position. The controls will be mounted on a polished stainless steel plate so should look OK. I am using ALLParts Fender type tuning keys and heavy duty bridge. I will be contouring the body and cutting out the neck hopefully tomorrow. Cant decide whether to clear lacquer finish it or add a touch of red tint Ive got to the finish.

Hi One-Way
Tough call.
One of my lottery dreams, is to own matching hand crafted guitars. Now the red tint sound good as well.
Like I first said.... tough call.
Perhaps you should sleep on it, or maybe take a nice long stroll in the New Zealand countryside, & the answer will come to you.
Please don't forget to send us pics of your progress, I still drool over the pics you uploaded, of your hand made strat.
Good Luck. Is the OD-1 still working?
Regards Dr. Bob |

do the red tint..
but sand-blast the ash, as per the Warwick Taranis.
Then tung-oil the lot.

And yes, pictures please!

Dr Bob, I didnt really use my OD1 that much and doubled the price I bought it for. The Behringer Blues overdrive probably doesnt sound quite as good as the OD1, but has more sound options with the tone control and for the price it was cheap for a new pedal Re Bass build The wood I thought was ok for the neck had to be scrapped. I picked up an offcut 1.3M piece of hard maple from my local timber importer. Theres enough to get a bass and strat neck out of the piece, so that is cool and for NZ$13.00 a bargain. My job tommorow will be machining it and cutting out the neck shape.

Bass update! I made a neck out of the nice piece of Maple I picked up. It has a double acting truss rod that I made myself and two 13x3mm steel stiffeners in the neck, one each side of the truss rod. I borrowed that idea from Warmoth. The purple heart fingerboard is radiused glued on and has fret slots cut. The fret markers are all fitted now and I just completed the final neck shaping and sanding. What I need to do now is do the final routing of the neck pocket in the body so the neck is a snug fit. Then I can fit the frets, level them and recrown them. I post some pics when I have time to stop. |
