While looking for material at www.archive.org to use in another video, by chance I came across Millions of Us, a short, obscure film from 1936 that tells the tale of an unemployed man in Depression-era New York. The original audio to the film is long lost, and in its stead I have written a number of punk/alt rock songs that attempt to capture the intent of the story. I apologise for it being in two parts, but there are all kinds of file size limits for uploading, & I did not want to compromise too much on audio quality. Anyway, here it is for your amusement. Feedback, especially of the loud wailing kind, is appreciated.
Part One (Runtime 8:02) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTgHHLElpls
Part Two (Runtime 7:47) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tabYd3dLLlE
Thanx TJ |

Hi redundant
This is a really fantastic concept, that you have thought of. And I can only try to imagine, how much time & effort you put into making this, all fit together, & syncing it to the video.
My hat goes of to you, & every one that helped you with this project. I will definitely go & have another look. Pity my lip reading skills aren't up to scratch.

Thanks to everyone who has watched, & especially to you Dr. Bob: thing is, this was a solo project, conceived, written & performed by me. |

Oh man .. i can totally relate to this.. i am thinking of recording things that have been bouncing around in my head ... working with a 4 piece band can be a pain, by yourself, its not 4x as long, its probably 8x as long! and for me, its 'infinitely' long! |

Fortunately, self motivation is not a problem. My problem (I'm sured one that is shared by others here) is finding and holding onto others who are as motivated as me. Home recording helps me overcome the frustration of waiting for others to ____________. (fill in the blank with any assortment of excuses you've heard over the years). Hence, why making videos & having YouTube working are so important - I don't get to play live often enough & need some outlet for what I'm doing.
The other thing about working at home is, of course, economic. Over the years, I've only been part of a few decent recordings where we actually had some $$$, (emphasis on the some, as in not that much). So most live recording stuff I've been part of has suffered in some way, especially the sound of the drums (typically rubbish). Learning to sequence drums really set me free. |

It would be really cool to gig this with a band and have a large screen as a backdrop with the film playing behind you.... |

Bloody great idea Franzoni. I just hope that one day redundant, can actually do such a gig.
As far as pushing a car with Square Wheels, Mine have felt more like Triangles. I have spent all my adult life trying to play my original music.
Redundant, I believe that there is a real market for your kind of creative sideways thinking, The whole concept of taking a movie with a lost soundtrack/s & re-creating it with your own personal touch & feelings. Even if it is a totally underground hip type market that you have created. You shouldn't let this great idea slid away, there are many people out there, that totally love this kind of creativity.
And rather than struggle to just be in a band, you should consider, setting yourself up to do similar projects for the underground & lesser known filmmakers in your country. For $$$ or course. The bigger guys will soon make a path to your door.
Do you remember, I once told you about my friend Jozef over in Bodrum? I believe that his wife is involved with some Turkish Film & arts society. I remember that Joz, was writing to me, that they were making a sort film about the history of the Zars - it even had some mythology in it. Joz was cast as some mythological God of lightning/thunder, & a slave trader. It might be worth while you contacting then & showing off your work. I am sure she/they would be interested.
PM me, via the forum if you want.

Defo agree with Dr Bob...this film is a great CV for you.. ..even though were a covers band i found that when i put up the myspace page with the stuff we recorded so far it generated interest in the others to start thinking about writing more and bringing the originals we have into the set again.... it's a great feeling to realise that the people you play music with, money isn't the only motavation....but it helps...... |

FRANZONI: I'd love to play the film live, but at the moment I'd be happy with playing a 55 minute version of Louie Louie in front of a cardboard cutout of Bugs Bunny. Really, the hassle of trying to put / keep together a band often does not seem worth the effort. About the only thing that drives me on right now is the desire to hear my Les Paul through a proper amp.
Dr. Bob: I'd also like to think that there was a market for this kind of thing, but the underwhelming number of video plays (11 as we speak, and one of those plays was me doing quality control) suggests otherwise. If I were 20 years younger & still living in Canada, I'd pursue this kind of work further. But, at age 46, w/ the requisite wife, child, mortgage, work..., I'm content to do what I bloody well want to do, throw it out there via Myspace & YouTube, & hope someone likes it. And fortunately, some people do like what I'm doing - I may not get lots of comments, but I do get great comments - which, at this point, is more than enough for me.
p.s. FRANZONI - what is this making money through music thing you refer to? I've heard legends about it, but have doubted their authenticity...

I'm in the same situ bro' with the mortgage, kids, bills etc.... the gigs do go some way to helping me out but like i said we play mainly covers,we used to sprinkle the set with a few of our own so i'm hoping they will return...were getting more gigs these days through our hard work with the setlist to keep people interested week after week and through going out knocking on doors and ringing, emailing etc.....were very active in this regard..like i said i know how lucky i am that the drummer and me want to be full time if possible at the music..it's a big help to have someone to bounce ideas off,the new bass player also seem very keen to pursue this as well....... |
